Volleyball Travels to Rider for Midweek Non-Conference Match

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple Owls volleyball team will be on the road to take on Rider in a midweek non-conference match up on Wednesday. This is the second time these teams squared off against one another this season with Temple winning the first at home in McGonigle Hall, but tomorrow's match will take place in Alumni Gymnasium in Lawrenceville, N.J. at 7 p.m. and will be available on the GoBroncs.com sports network.

The Owls return home to McGonigle Hall on Friday, Oct.25 against UTSA at 6 p.m. to continue AAC action two days later, the Cherry and White will host Rice at 1 p.m. Both matches will be available on ESPN+.

SCOUTING TEMPLE
- The Cherry and White are 9-12 overall and 2-6 in the American Athletic Conference.
- Temple enters Wednesday's match after going 1-1 last week in a pair of matches against East Carolina and Charlotte. Freshman Sydney Jones recorded 16 kills and 10 digs on Friday night, her sixth double-double of the season. Two days later, the Owls snapped a three-match losing streak defeating Charlotte by the score of 25-14, 25-20, 27-25. The Owls were led by graduate student Taylor Davenport who came away with a match-high 16 kills while hitting .382 and tying for a match-high with three aces. Subsequently earning her honorable mention in the American Athletic Conference.
- Davenport tied for the Owls lead last weekend with 25 kills while averaging 4.17 kills per set but led the team with 5.33 kills per set versus the 49ers.
- Sophomore setter Lexi Yoza averaged 8.50 assists per set in two matches and six sets. In all, Yoza averaged a double-double starting with 20 assists and 14 digs on Friday night at East Carolina. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native's weekend was highlighted by a sweep of the Charlotte 49ers where she had 31 assists, averaging 10.50 assists per set and 16 digs.
- Freshman outside hitter Sydney Jones tied for the Owls lead last weekend with 25 kills while averaging 4.17 kills per set. The Havertown, Pa. started her weekend with her sixth career-double double with a team-high 16 kills and 10 digs versus East Carolina. Jones averaged an amazing 5.33 kills per set. Jones was one kill shy of 10 in Saturday's win against Charlotte, but her ninth and final kill at match point was the biggest of the match, fending off a 10-0 rally by the 49ers.
- Davenport leads the AAC this season in three offensive categories, including points (352.5), points per set (4.90), and kills (304), and points per set (4.89). The Columbia, S.C. native also is second with 4.22 kills per set.
- As a first-year, Jones is putting herself in the top offensive players in the conference. The Havertown, Pa. native is third in aces per set with .41, fifth with 3.37 kills per set, ninth with 199 kills, fourth with 3.89 points per set, and ninth with 229.5 total points.
- In conference matches, the Owls are ranked second with 2.20 blocks per set with senior Chelci Banks ranked eight in the AAC, averaging 1.00 blocks per set and ranks first with 12 solo blocks.
- The host team comes into Wednesday's match with an overall record of 7-14. Before losing its last two matches to Sacred Heart and Fairfield last weekend, Rider reeled off six straight wins to for a 6-3 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
- The Broncs began the weekend with a four-set loss on Friday night, falling to Sacret Heart, 31-29, 21-25, 25-23, 25-22. Defensively in the match, the Broncs had 14 blocks in the match while Ryle Frye and Makenna Mason combined for 40 digs, 20 digs apiece. Paige Giehtbrock had a Broncs team-high 12 kills.
- Rider fell to Fairfield on Sunday, 25-14, 25-27, 25-22, 25-20. However, Brynn Johnson led the Broncs with a career-high 16 kills, her fourth match in double figures this season and Giehtbrock recorded her fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 12 kills and 10 digs.
- As a squad, RU is ranked fourth in the MAAC with 15.94 points per set and 1227 total points, third with a .184 hitting percentage, fifth with 11.00 assists per set and 847 total assists, fourth with 12.23 kills per set, second with 2.06 blocks per set and 159 total blocks.
- Kiannisha Santiago is one of the Broncs offensive leaders she is ranks 10th in the conference with 2.99 kills per set, sixth with 212 kills, and seventh with 244.5 points.
- On the defensive side, Molly Rohde is second in the MAAC with 1.07 blocks per set and 73 total blocks. Teammate Keegan O'Connor is ranked fifth with 3.55 digs per set.
- To begin 2024, these two teams matched up in the Cherry and White Invitational with Temple winning in 3-1, 26-24, 25-15, 22-25, 25-21. In the match, the Owls' Taylor Davenport tallied a match-high 20 kills, with setter Lexi Yoza dishing out 26 assists and fellow setter Ava Blascziek added 22 assists. Paige Geightbrock led the Broncs with 10 kills.
- Temple leads the all-time series 12-0.
