Fencing Ready for 44th Annual Coach Nikki Franke Classic

PHILADELPHIA - The No. 9 Temple fencing team is set to close out the preseason with the 44th annual Coach Nikki Franke Classic (formerly the Temple Open) on Oct. 26-27 at the Liacouras Center. 
 
LAST YEAR
  • The Owls had an impressive showing at last year's event, with 11 fencers finishing in the top-15 and four Temple student athletes added medals by finishing within the top-8.
  • Returning fencers including: foilist Anna Novoseltseva and epeeist Lindsey Minor earned bronze medals.
  • Former Owls Alexandra Weinberg and Zoe Turner added a fifth place and eight place finish, respectively in sabre.
LAST TIMEOUT
  • Earlier in October, foilist Constanca Dimas picked up a medal, finishing in eighth place of the DII Foil Division of the October North American Cup in Atlantic City, N.J.  Dimas ended pool one play with a 4-2 record and the second-best touch score of +4. Dimas moved all the through the quarterfinals, as she defeated Elena Ziniti-Lau, 15-8, Sylvie Troxel, 15-12, Auset Muhammad, 15-6, Elise Ann Dimatulac, 15-10, before getting eliminated by Kayley Ren by the score of 15-4.
  • In the DII Epee Division, junior Anne-Mai Melles finished 4-1 in pool play with a +10 touch score. The Estonia native worked her way all the way to the semifinals, finishing sixth overall and earning a medal after knocking off Rachel Meyer, Ella Nguyen, Hannah Wang, and Caitlin Wong before being knocked out by Ella Stojakovic by a close score of 15-13.
  • After finishing pool play-round best +12 in the DI Foil, Novoseltseva moved through the elimination play to the round of 32. The three-time NCAA Championship qualifier picked up a top-25 finish, defeating Nicole Pevzner, 15-7, Iris Yang, 15-8, but fell to Zander Rhodes 15-11.
START TIME
  • The Temple women will compete on just the Saturday, starting with open round fencing starting at 8 a.m. with the foil. Epee will begin at 9:30 a.m. with sabre starting at 12:30 p.m.
