Late Comeback Falls Short as Men’s Basketball Falls to Memphis, 84-77

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple Men's Basketball team (8-15, 1-9 AAC) was defeated by the Memphis Tigers (17-6, 6-4 AAC), 84-77. Despite trailing by upwards of 23 points, the Owls trimmed the lead to within one possession late in the second half. In a game of runs, Memphis held on late to defeat Temple by seven points in a game that ended up coming down to the wire.
Jahlil White led the Owls with 20 points, just one shy of a career high.
First Half: Temple 45, Memphis 27
> Jahlil White opened up the scoring with a mid range jump shot that tied the game at 2-2 with 18:10 remaining in the first half. The Tigers answered with a 7-0 run that put the Owls behind 9-2.
> Shane Dezonie converted a three-pointer to cut the Memphis lead to 11-9 at the first media timeout with 14:44 on the clock. The three-pointer was part of a 9-0 run for the Cherry & White that tied the game at 11-1 with 14:10 remaining in the half.
> Temple took its first lead at 12:24 when Emmanuel Okpomo converted a layup to give the Owls a 13-12 advantage, but an 8-0 run by the Tigers erased the Owls advantage (MEM 20-13).
> Neither team shot well from beyond the arc during the games first 11 minutes (TEM 1-11, MEM 1-8).
> Memphis extended its lead to 26-16 with 7:13 remaining in the half off a three-pointer from Jahvon Quinerly. The Owls endured an 11-0 run that put the Tigers up 31-16 with 5:45 left in the half.
> Memphis used 7-0, 9-0, and 11-0 runs to build a sizable lead. Temple closed out the half on a 7-2 run to go into the half trailing 45-27.
> White led Temple in both scoring and rebounding in the first half with 11 points and four boards.
> The Tigers' scorching shooting in the first half contributed to the halftime score. Memphis shot 17-31 (55%) from the field in the opening 20 minutes.
Second Half: Temple 84, Memphis 77
> The Owls got off to a good start to the second half, opening up the frame with an 8-0 run that cut the lead to 10 (45-35, MEM).
> An 8-0 run by Memphis in response put the Tigers back up by 18 (53-35, MEM).
> Out of a timeout, the Owls bounced back with a 5-0 run to trim Memphis' lead to 55-42 with 13:48 remaining in regulation.
>The Owls clawed their way back into contention thanks to a 12-0 run that cut the deficit to six points with 8:05 remaining in the game at a media timeout (63-57, MEM).
> Out of that timeout, Shane Dezonie hit a three-pointer to put Temple within three, before Memphis ended the Owls' 15-0 run with a three of their own.
> A step-back three by Hysier Miller cut the lead to 68-65, before Memphis answered back with a three of their own at the 5:46 mark (71-65, MEM).
> The Tigers extended the lead to 73-65, before an and-one by Jordan Riley cut the deficit to five. A subsequent three-pointer by Memphis put the Tigers back up 76-68, prompting a Temple timeout with 1:35 remaining in regulation.
> A pair of free-throws from White, two missed free-throws from Memphis, and a three-pointer by Matteo Piccarelli in the corner cut Memphis' lead to 80-77 with 27.9 remaining.
> Memphis held on in the final stages of the game, walking away victorious by a score of 84-77.
> Miller and Shane Dezonieled the Owls in second-half scoring, each posting 12 points. Miller converted
