Gymnastics Ready for Two Home Meets This Week In McGonigle

PHILADELPHIA - The Owls' gymnastics team returns to McGonigle Hall for the final home meets in 2024 starting with an Owls' quad meet on Thursday, March 7 at 1 p.m. EST. The Owls will host No. 21 NC State Wolfpack along with the No. 36 Maryland Terrapins, and the Penn Quakers. Just three days later the William and Mary Tribe, the Long Island Sharks, and the West Chester Golden Rams will visit for Senior Day. Meet time is slated for 2:30 p.m. EDT. Both meets will be available on ESPN+.

Following Thursday's meet will be a post meet autograph session and then on Sunday we will honor our senior class once the meet concludes.

LAST TIME OUT
During week nine, the Owls visited the No. 21 NC State Wolfpack for a quad meet. During the quad, Temple finished in fourth place as it scored 194.425. NC State won the meet with a 197.000, while Iowa State finished in second with a 196.700, while Northern Illinois came in third place with a 195.200. Overall, the Cherry and White finished with nine 9.8s or better, highlighted by career-bests from senior Mackenzie Aresta (9.850) and freshman Hannah Weklar (9.825) on vault.

ROAD TO THE NATIONALS
The Owls best event this season has been on floor where they are ranked 52nd in the RoadtoNationals rankings with a 49.000. The other rankings include 53rd on bars (48.610), and 58th on vault (48.675) and beam (48.370).

VAULT
The Owls used nine gymnasts thus far this season on vault, with freshmen Hailey Best, Hannah Weklar, Amelia Budd, and junior Madison Dorunda seeing action on the apparatus for the first time in their careers. Fellow junior Summer Ruskey returned to the Owls' vault lineup for the first time since 2022.

The last time out at NC State, the Owls scored a 48.875 with Weklar and senior Mackenzie Aresta leading the way. Senior Renee Schugman scored 9.775, her sixth score of 9.7 or better this season. Also scoring 9.7s were junior Summer Ruskey with a 9.725 and freshman Amelia Budd with a 9.700.Â

Notably, the senior Schugman has been the most consistent TU performer on vault, averaging 9.731. She's earned a 9.7 or better in six of the eight meets she's competed.

BARS
The Owls struggled on bars, scoring a 47.750 at NC State. Junior Sarah Stallings led the Owls with a 9.825. Also scoring above a 9.7 was sophomore Emily Johnson. The Highlands Ranch, Colo. native scored a 9.725, her sixth score of 9.7 or better in seven meets she's competed.

Thus far through in eight meets, the junior Stallings has won a team-best four times on bars. Stallings started out the season with three-straight 9.8s or better and five overall. In her career, the Raleigh, N.C. native has earned 21 scores of 9.8-plus and nine bars event championships. Stallings is ranked No. 4 in RoadtoNationals EAGL NQS rankings with a 9.840.

BEAM
Senior Brooke Donabedian led the Owls on beam at NC State, leading the team to a 48.775. The Maple Valley, Wash. senior scored a 9.825, her fourth 9.8 or better this season. Madison Dorunda earned her second straight 9.8 and fifth overall such score with a 9.8 or higher, while Renee Schugman scored her sixth overall 9.8 or better this season with a 9.8.

Dorunda is currently ranked sixth in the EAGL and 16th in the northeast region with a 9.815 NQS.

FLOOR
The Owls came out firing on all cylinders in the first rotation at NC State as they scored a 49.025. It was the third straight 49 for the floor team and fifth overall this season. The senior Brooke Donabedian and Renee Schugman led the Owls with 9.850s. Junior Summer Ruskey was just .025 short of last week's mark, scoring a 9.825. It's the Taneytown, Md. native's third straight and fifth overall 9.8 or better.

Donabedian has also been a consistent performer in the event with seven scores in at least the 9.8 range. The Maple Valley, Wash. native has added four events wins and four times this season she's scored a 9.900 and now 13 times in her career.

Donabedian and freshman Payton Monk rank within the top 10 of the RoadtoNationals EAGL NQS rankings, No. 2 (9.880) and No. 8 (9.840), respectively.

SCOUTING NC STATE
NC State improved to 9-4 overall after last Saturday when it scored a 197-plus for the fourth time in its program history and second straight home meet. The Wolfpack landed first-place finishes on two events, with Emily Shepard tying Katie Harper with a 9.950 on bars. Shepard and Edwards tied one another with a 9.925 on floor. Shepard went on to claim her sixth all-around event title with a 39.525.

SCOUTING MARYLAND
Maryland comes into Thursday's meet after picking up a quad meet victory at Yale on Sunday where they scored a season-high score of 197.300. On bars, the Terrapins scored a 49.400. Four Terps scored 9.850 or higher, including Alexa Rothenbuescher scoring a career-high 9.925. In rotation two, Madeline Komoroski tied her career-high on beam with a 9.925 score. The Terps scored two more 9.9s starting with Rhea LeBlanc on floor with a 9.900 and then Natalie Martin ended Maryland's day on the vault with a career-high 9.925.

SCOUTING PENN
On Saturday at the Texas Womans quad meet, the Penn Quakers finished with a fourth-place score of 194.825. Skyelar Kerico completed the all-around of 39.300, the second-highest score in program history, one week removed from setting the new record with a 39.325 at the Ivy Classic. Kerico finished sixth among all-arounders at the meet, while teammate Sara Kenefick placed eighth (38.775).

SCOUTING WILLIAM AND MARY
The William & Mary women's gymnastics team posted its second-best score of the season with a 193.200. The Tribe finished fourth at Maryland quad meet. William and Mary scored a season best on bars (48.475) as Caroline Blatchfor tied for third individually, helping her to a career-high 9.800. Madeline Frazier tied for seventh on beam but had the highest score from any Tribe gymnast on Friday night, earning a 9.875.

SCOUTING WEST CHESTER
The last time out for West Chester was a struggle overall for the Golden Rams, scoring a season low 190.700 at the Rutgers quad meet. WCU finished in fourth place, but Lily McFarland finished in fourth on the beam with a score of 9.775, while teammate Caroline Cascadden scored a 9.750 to tie for fifth place. Also earning a top 10 score on beam was Madison Whitaker with a 9.725 was ninth with a 9.725 rounding out three Golden Rams in the Top 10 on the beam.

The Owls will finish out the regular season at New Hampshire, a week from Sunday, March 17, with a quad meet with the host Wildcats, Brown, and Bridgeport.
