Jones Earns Third Double-Double of Season at Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan. – The Owls' volleyball team began American Athletic Conference play on Friday night, falling at Wichita State (7-5, 0-1 AAC) 20-25, 25-20, 15-25, 25-27. While Temple falls to 6-7 overall and 0-1 in conference play, freshman Sydney Jones led the Cherry and White with a double-double, 12 kills and a team-high 10 digs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Temple outside hitter Taylor Davenport pitched in with a team-high 13 kills.
  • The Shockers had four hitters with 10 or more kills. Led by Alyssa Gonzales' 17, she was followed by Emerson Wilford with 13, Brooklyn Leggett (12), and Morgan Stout (11).
  • As a team, WSU hit .302 as a team, but held the Owls to .169 with help of 65 digs coming from four players with 10 or more. Annalie Heliste led her team and the match with 18.
 
Set 1 (WSU 25, TEM 20)
  • Wichita State led from start to finish in the set while hitting .302 as a team.
  • Leggett and Gonzales combined for 10 kills with each Shockers' player tallying five apiece.
  • Going into the media timeout, the Shockers held a nine-point advantage, including a string of scoring five in a row. During that run, Wilford had three of her four kills in the first set.
  • TU was able to close Wichita's lead to three points on two occasions but were unable to catch the fast starting Shockers.
 
Set 2 (TEM 25, WSU 20)
  • The Cherry and White offense was efficient in the second set, hitting .314.
  • Jones and Davenport combined for 11 kills, with Jones leading the set with six kills and a .714 hitting percentage while Davenport tallied five kills and a .444 hitting percentage.
  • While Shockers went into the media timeout up, 15-11, the Owls turned the advantage to their favor by scoring six of the next seven points, taking a 17-16 lead with the help of a pair of block assists and kill from freshman Christiana Greene.
  • The Owls retained the lead and won the set by reeling off five of the final six points with Davenport putting two of her five-set kills.
 
Set 3 (WSU 25, TEM 16)
  • The Shockers hit .450 with Stout leading the set with four kills and hitting .600.
  • Wichita State used runs of four, 4-0 or more to win the third set.
  • WSU held the Owls to a .033 hitting percentage.
 
Set 4 (WSU 27, TEM 25)
  • The two teams combined for 14 ties and six lead changes.
  • Davenport's three kills to begin the fourth set helped the Owls take a 15-13 lead going into the media timeout.
  • Temple extended its lead to three points, 19-16, but WSU scored six of the next seven points. Stout, Gonzales, Leggett, and Madison Wilson all earned kills, helping the Shockers take a 22-20 advantage.
  • Both teams traded the lead, but Wichita State scored four of the final five points for the win with the help of kills Wilson, Gonzales, and Stout.
