Owls Conclude Competition at USA Fencing Junior Olympics

 CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Five fencers from No. 8 Temple competed at USA Fencing's Junior Olympics over the weekend. The two days were highlighted by three advancing to the round of 64 and four reaching the round of 128 in a very competitive field.

The Owls will return to action next weekend at the Temple Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 23. Competition begins at 8:30 a.m. in McGonigle Hall, with the annual Senior Day recognition scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

SABRE
- Freshmen Samantha Nathanson and Alexandra Papapetropoulou represented the Owls in the Division I sabre event on Friday.
- Nathanson finished pool play with a 3-3 record and a +1 touch score, earning the No. 82 seed heading into the elimination round. She received a bye to the round of 128, where she defeated Elaine Lin (West Coast Fencing Academy) 15-5. Nathanson's run ended in the round of 64 with a 15-8 loss to eventual silver medalist Sophia Kovacs (North Carolina).
- Papapetropoulou finished 1-5 in pool play and did not advance to the elimination round.
EPEE
- Freshmen Victoria Doroshkevich and Auprell Edwards, along with sophomore Lindsey Minor, competed in Division I epee on Saturday.
- Doroshkevich posted a 4-2 pool record with a +2 touch score, earning a bye to the round of 128 as the No. 72 seed. She then upset No. 56 Anda Wattanakit (Medeo Fencing Club) before falling in the round of 64 to 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Courtney Hurley.
- Edwards finished pool play 3-3 with a +1 touch score. She opened the round of 256 with a 12-10 win over Nika Ungurianu (Vassar College) before losing to No. 16 Karolina Nixon, a former Columbia fencer.
- Minor recorded a 4-2 pool record with a +1 touch score, earning a bye to the round of 128 as the No. 74 seed. She then defeated No. 55 CJ Tolsma 15-10 before being eliminated in the round of 64 by Kai Lui, a former Princeton fencer and current Yale coach.
