Kate Stewart nets game winner, first career goal
Philadelphia – Kate Stewart picked an opportune time to score her first career goal. The senior netted the game-winner less than four minutes into the second overtime to lift the Temple field hockey team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over #10 Massachusetts in front of a homecoming crowd on Sunday afternoon.
Despite playing in frigid conditions that had strong wind and intermittent rain throughout the contest, the Owls (5-10, 1-1 A-10) were able to come back from an early second half deficit to earn their first A-10 victory of the year. The loss drops UMass to 0-2 in the conference and 9-6 overall.
After falling behind 1-0 five minutes into the second half on a goal from Makaela Potts, the Cherry and White would refuse to allow the Minutewomen to find the back of the cage again.
Continual pressure from the Owl's forwards finally paid off a little less than half way through the second half. Sophomore Bridget Settles was able to gain control of the ball on the edge of the left side of the circle and dribble in towards the goal. While closing in on the cage, she found Mandi Ruth just a few yards out from the goal line and delivered a pass to Ruth's stick. Ruth did not miss a step as she sent the ball rocketing into the back of the cage to tie the game at 1-1.
Back and forth play for the remainder of regulation and through the first overtime saw the score remain tied despite numerous opportunities for both teams.
With pressure mounting and time winding down, the game looked as if it could be headed towards another shootout, just as the contest between these two squads did last year.
But Stewart and her teammates had other plans.
After maintaining possession in the offensive third, Ruth found herself open on the right side of circle and fired a hard shot that was saved by UMass goalkeeper Alesha Widdall. However, the ball bounced back out and Settles was able to gain control of the ball. Settles, realizing she did not have a clear shot on goal, passed the ball to Stewart who struck the ball into the back of the cage setting off a wild celebration on Geasey Field.
Settles finished the game with her third and fourth assists on the season. Ruth's goal gives her three on the year.
Junior goalkeeper Sarah Dalrymple had a stellar game in goal as she came away with nine saves, including a couple that saved the game for the Owls.
The Cherry and White will continue A-10 play at West Chester on Friday, October 23 at 3:00 p.m.
