Bridget Settles' second-half goal proves to be the difference
Box Score
PHILADELPHIA – In a crucial Atlantic 10 matchup on Sunday, the Temple field hockey team (6-11, 2-2 A-10) was able to overcome a slow first half and pick up a 1-0 victory over league rival La Salle (7-11, 2-3 A-10). Sophomore Bridget Settles scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season to give the Owls the much-needed victory.
During the first half, neither team could generate much offensive pressure as a majority of the play took place in the middle third of the field. La Salle had five shots and the only penalty corner of the first half for either team. Temple was able to register only two shots. After one half of play, the score remained knotted at 0-0.
Immediately after halftime, both teams picked up the offensive pressure, especially the Owls.
Eight minutes into the second half, the Cherry and White strung together a number of consecutive penalty corners to keep the Explorers on their heels. At 9:54 into the second half, Settles was finally able to find the back of the cage. Taking the pass off of the end line, senior Mandi Ruth stopped the ball at the top of the circle for classmate Charise Young. Instead of firing a shot by on her own, Young opted to send a pass to Settles who took a shot that deflected off of the Explorers' goalkeeper, Emma Ruth, and found its way into the back of the net. The assist was Young's seventh of the year.
The one-goal margin is all that Temple goalkeeper Sarah Dalrymple and the rest of her defense would need to secure the victory.
Dalrymple made five saves on the day and picked up her third shutout of the season.
The Owls dominated the second half offensively as they registered 14 shots and seven penalty corners compared to four and two, respectively, for La Salle.
Temple will wrap up regular season play next weekend. On Friday, Oct. 30, the Owls will travel to Saint Louis and then on Sunday, Nov., 1, the team will play its final home game of the season against Richmond. Start time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
