Owls wrap up regular season play with two weekend contests
PHILADELPHIA – The Temple field hockey team will conclude 2009 regular season play this weekend with two critical Atlantic 10 matchups. Coming off a 1-0 win over city and conference rival La Salle last Sunday, the Owls (6-11, 2-2 A-10) are looking to improve upon their 2-2 conference record and secure a spot in the upcoming A-10 Tournament.
Up first for the Cherry and White will be a road contest at Saint Louis on Friday, October 30 at 2:00 p.m. The Billikens (1-14, 0-4) have struggled in conference play this season as they have lost a number of players to injuries. Last weekend they dropped a 10-1 decision to UMass.
On Sunday, November 1 at 12:00 p.m. at Geasey Field, the Owls will honor their six seniors for their outstanding careers at Temple. Kimmi Hanshue, Kasey Ruth, Mandi Ruth, Kate Stewart, Kristen Wanner, and Charise Young will each be recognized prior to the final game home game of their careers.
Coming to town to face off against TU will be Richmond. The Spiders currently sit on top of the A-10 standings with a perfect 4-0 record in conference play. Last weekend Richmond traveled to UMass and came away with a hard fought 1-0 victory.
The Owls are currently in fourth place in the A-10 standings but much can change throughout the course of this weekend. In order to guarantee themselves a spot in postseason play, the Cherry and White must win both contests.
Head coach Amanda Janney realizes the significance of both games this weekend. “It's an important weekend as we have to win two games to ensure a spot in the A-10 Tournament,” said Janney. “The team is playing well right now and I'm glad we have so many seniors to lead us through this crucial weekend. It's an honor to be able to recognize these six players on Sunday for all of their contributions to the program.”
