Owls undone by five second-half goals; prevent shutout with 11 seconds remaining

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – After playing 19th-ranked Michigan to a scoreless tie in the first half, the Temple field hockey team saw a shooting barrage by the Wolverines lead to five-second half goals as the Owls lost 5-1 in a neutral-site contest.

Temple's Kasey Ruth scored on a penalty corner with just 11 seconds remaining in the game to prevent the shutout.

A balanced first half of play saw Michigan record five shots to Temple's three, and the Owls tally three penalty corners to the Wolverines' two.

The tide turned in the second half when Michigan's Alicia Mayer scored seven minutes in, just after a penalty corner. The corner was the first of five for the Wolverines in the second period, while Temple would record only the one just before the end of the game.

Michigan took a 2-0 lead less than two minutes later, and scored two more on penalty corners midway through the period. Bryn Bain put the Wolverines up 5-0 with an unassisted goal from the top of the circle with three minutes left to play.

Temple recorded only one shot in the second half compared to 14 for Michigan. Owl goalkeeper Sarah Dalrymple made seven saves in the second period and nine overall.

The Owls have a change in schedule for their next game on Friday, Sept. 11. Originally scheduled as a home contest, the game will now be played at Lafayette at 4:30 p.m. due to ongoing construction at Temple's Geasey Field.
