PHILADELPHIA
- Playing the second half of a season opening twinbill with the women's team at the Liacouras Center Friday night, the #22/22 Temple men's basketball team (1-0) opened the 2010-11 season victorious with a 62-56 win over Seton Hall (0-1).  Junior Ramone Moore led the Owls with 14 points on the game, while classmate Juan Fernandez and sophomore Rahlir Jefferson also scored in double figures.

Moore (6-13, 14 pts) helped Temple to its second consecutive win over Big East foe Seton Hall, teaming with Fernandez to spark an 18-4 first half run that gave Temple a commanding lead for the remainder of the contest.  The Owls held a potent Pirates offense, which averaged 80.1 ppg. a year ago, to just 24 points in the first half.

Junior Micheal Eric (8 pts, 6 reb) particularly asserted his dominance on the defensive end, besting his single-game career high in the first half alone with a game-high five blocks, one of which he sent into the stands above the Temple bench.

Eric had help from classmate Scootie Randall on the boards.  Randall cleaned up a career-best in rebounds in his first career start, as he and senior Lavoy Allen each collected nine.  Sophomore Rahlir Jefferson (4-5, 10 pts, 10 reb) recorded his first career double-double, leading Temple with 10 rebounds and adding as many points.

Temple matched the high energy of the visitors out of the opening tip, but SHU junior Jordan Theodore netted seven of the visitors first nine points to keep the Pirates afloat until an Allen layup tied the game at 9-9 at 14:57.  Seven turnovers to Seton Hall's one during that time hampered the TU scoring efforts.

"I was very proud of how we managed the second half of the first half, and I was pretty proud of how we managed the first fifteen minutes of the second half," said head coach Fran Dunphy.  "Overall I saw some good things and hopefully we'll get better."

Despite struggling early on in the first half, the Owls battled back to close the stanza with a 34-24 lead thanks to an 18-4 run.  Making his first appearance off the bench, Jefferson gave the Owls a spark as he tipped in an Eric miss at 10:32.  That play led to seven consecutive points from Fernandez - two jumpers and a trey - to give Temple a lead they would not relinquish at 22-20.

A trio of two-pointers from sophomore Khalif Wyatt, Eric and Moore extended that margin to 31-20, and an old-fashioned three-point play from Moore gave the Owls a 14-point lead - their largest of the half with 1:23 remaining.

Moore propelled the Owls out of the break, accounting for Temple's first five second half points.  After a jumper from Eric at 17:12, neither side would find cotton for the nearly four minutes.  SHU's Hazell sunk a three to end the drought at 13:43, but the Owls would push their largest lead of the night to 15 by virtue of two-pointers from Allen and Moore, and a nice offensive rebound into a reverse layup by Randall at 11:06.

The Pirates would come close at 7:17, cutting the Owls' lead to 10 at 51-41 on a 6-2 run.  Jefferson hit a close-range jumper to halt the momentum and, after a pair of free throws from SHU's Edwin Fuquan, found a streaking Randall for an easy layup.

Seton Hall would attempt another late run, as a layup from senior Jeff Robinson and two free throws and a three from senior Jamel Jackson cut the deficit to nine.  With a deep three by Hazell, the Pirates came within six with just :33 on the clock.

After a miss on the front end of a one-and-one by Fernandez, SHU senior Jeff Robinson took a feed in the paint for an uncontested layup to inch closer at 60-56 with :20 remaining.  Fernandez redeemed himself with two made free throws to close the contest at 62-56.

Temple returns to the Liacouras Center on Sunday, November 14, for a showdown with Toledo at 3:00 p.m.
