PHILADELPHIA - Fresh off a 68-65 win over #9/10 Georgetown, the Temple Owls get right back on the court Sunday when they host Akron at the Liacouras Center (3:00 p.m./OwlAccess). It is the middle game of a three-game homestand for the Owls, who have won 11 straight in the building, and the first of three straight Mid-American Conference opponents. In honor of Temple Athletics' “Allen's Town” campaign, which supports men's basketball All-America candidate Lavoy Allen, anyone with the first or last name of “Allen” or “Alan” will receive group pricing (as much as $7 off tickets) at the Box Office (must show ID) for this Sunday's game.
Under the direction of head coach Fran Dunphy, who notched his 400th career win with Thursday's victory over the Hoyas, the Owls have won three straight games since a tough trip to the Old Spice Classic to improve to 6-2 on the season. Junior guard Ramone Moore, who leads the Cherry and White with a 14.5 scoring average, exploded for a career-high 30 points against Georgetown. Junior guard Juan Fernandez (10.9 ppg.) and senior forward Lavoy Allen (10.0 ppg.) also average double-figures while junior forward Scootie Randall (7.5 ppg.) leads the squad in steals (11) and three-pointers (10).
Defense has been the key to Temple's start. The Owls lead the Atlantic 10 in scoring defense (56.6 ppg.) and rank 11th nationally in the category. Georgetown's 65 points were the most an opponent has scored against Temple all season.
Akron, under the direction of seventh-year head coach Keith Dambrot, is off to a 4-2 start. The Zips balanced offense boasts four double-figure scorers led by junior forward Nikola Cventinovic (14.8 ppg.). Junior guard Brett McClanahan (13.7 ppg.) leads the team in rebounding (5.8 rpg,) and three-pointers (15) while seven-foot sophomore center Zeke Marshall (12.2 ppg.) tops Akron with 16 blocks. Senior guard Darryl Roberts (10.2 ppg.) rounds out the team's double-digit scorers.
Akron has won both previous meetings between the schools. The Zips defeated Temple in Akron, 67-65, on Nov. 26, 2007 and posted an 80-73 victory at the Liacouras Center in the first round of the 2006 NIT (3/14/06).
