PHILADELPHIA - A three-goal first half propelled the Temple field hockey team (1-0) to their first win of the season, 4-2, over Bucknell (0-1) in the Temple Invitational, Saturday afternoon at Geasey Field. Four different Owls tallied in the contest, with freshman Madi Blyler netting the third and eventual game winner.
Bucknell came out of the gates with an early goal in the seventh minute, as senior Corinne Raczek stick stopped a corner for a blast from sophomore Taylor Siegrist to the right side.
The Owls would settle down and begin to take control shortly after, as senior Taryn Nichols would connect with sophomore Taylor Musser in traffic for the game tying goal in the 13th minute. Seconds later, Temple took the lead off of another corner, as freshman Molly Doyle netted her first collegiate goal.
Temple put one more in before the break, as Blyler gathered a loss ball and lifted a shot over traffic in the front of the net to give the Owls a definitive 3-1 lead. The Cherry and White outshot their opponent 11-6 in the first half, but would be forced on the defensive in the second.
The Bison came out of half engergized, netting a goal in the 36th minute off of a corner. Senior Christine Weiss lifted a shot over Owl's keeper senior Sarah Dalrymple to bring the game to within one at 3-2. Dalrymple and the Temple defense proved solid throughout the game, combining for three saves.
Owls' junior Bridgette Settles put the game out of reach in the 49th minute, showing stellar stick handling in dribbling through the crease and shooting right side to extend the Temple lead to 4-2.
In the end, Temple outshot Bucknell 13-12.
