1.18.11 | Men's Basketball
Temple women take on SJU, but game does not count in city-series standings
Game Notes
PHILADELPHIA - Temple (12-4, 0-1 Big 5) returns to the friendly confines of the Liacouras Center to host city-rival Penn (5-7, 0-2) in a Big 5 battle Wednesday night (7:30 p.m./OwlAccess). The game is the nightcap of a women's/men's doubleheader with the Temple women (11-6, 3-0 A-10) hosting Saint Joseph's (11-6, 1-2). That game does not count in the Big 5 standings as the city-series meeting will be on February 23 at SJU.
It will be the second meeting between coach and pupil when Fran Dunphy patrols the sidelines against his former Penn standout Jerome Allen. The Owls won last year's battle at the Palestra, 60-45, on January 13, spoiling his home debut as the Quakers' head coach.
The Owls, who dropped out of the polls Monday following a 78-66 loss at Duquesne Saturday, have won 15 straight home games, the second longest streak in the Liacouras Center's history. Junior guard Ramone Moore continues to lead the Cherry and White attack, averaging 15.4 points while pulling down 5.0 rebounds per game. Junior Juan Fernandez, who played 20 minutes off the bench Saturday after missing the previous two games due to a bone bruise of the left knee, tops the squad in assists (52) while placing second in scoring (10.8 ppg.). Senior Lavoy Allen (10.7 ppg.) leads the Owls in rebounding (6.2 rpg.).
Juniors Scootie Randall (9.1 ppg.) and Micheal Eric (6.9 ppg., 5.6 rpg.) round out the starting five with Randall leading the squad in three-pointers (20) and Eric topping the team in blocks (26).
Junior guard Zack Rosen (16.0 ppg.) and senior forward Jack Eggleston (12.9 ppg.) lead the Quaker attack. The duo are rarely off the floor with Eggleston, who tops UP in rebounding (7.8 rpg.), playing 38.0 minutes per game and Rosen, the team leader in threes (26) and assists (55), averaging 36.5 minutes per contest. Freshman guard Miles Cartwright (11.9 ppg.) has made an immediate impact while senior guard Tyler Bernardini (9.7 ppg.) has been steady.
The Owls lead the all-time series, 43-22, and have won three straight and six of the last seven meetings.
