PHILADELPHIA - Patience was the name of the game for Temple field hockey in its 2011 home finale against Liberty, and it paid off for the Owls who earned a shutout win against the Flames on Friday afternoon, 3-0. Temple (8-11) got two goals from Bridget Settles, putting her at 18 for the season, and a third goal from Tori Cox.

Liberty (5-10) is a first-year field hockey program and helped Temple celebrate "Play 4 The Cure" day as both teams donned a number of pink articles of clothing and ribbons to show support in the fight against breast cancer.

The first half was a slow one, with only five total shots for Temple and zero for Liberty as the score remained knotted in a 0-0 tie at halftime. The Owls had two penalty corner chances, but Liberty goalkeeper Ann Jefferis came up with four big saves in the half.

Temple began to pick up the pace in the second half, firing more and more shots on goal, but patience was still key as it took until the 53rd minute (17 minutes into the second half) before the Owls scored their first goal of the game.

Katie Briglia dribbled the ball in from the left and fed Settles with a quick pass in front of the net for the first score of the game, which would prove to be the game-winner. Settles struck again in the 61st minute when Amber Youtz gave her a pass from the top left of the circle.

Temple's third goal came a short time later, when Tori Cox was able to tip-in a long pass from Mandi Shearer. The shut out, recorded by the Owls' Lizzy Millen, is the third of the season.

Temple will conclude the regular season with an A-10 game at Lock Haven on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 1:00 p.m. The Owls have earned a berth in the four-team A-10 Tournament which will be held at Saint Joseph's next weekend (Nov. 4-5) but are looking to earn the second seed.
