BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Temple volleyball team was able to get a set win in both of its matches on the final day of the Blackbird Invitational, but ultimately lost to both Syracuse and host Long Island by scores of 3-1. The Owls (3-6) took the first set against Syracuse (7-2), 26-24, but lost the next three, 25-12, 25-22 and 25-22. Long Island (3-7) won by scores of 25-23, 14-25, 25-19 and 25-20.

Chelsea Tupuola led the back row effort in both matches with 33 total digs for the day.
The Owls came out strong against the Orangewomen of Syracuse, displaying their best hitting of the match in the first set and out-hitting their opponent .333 to .255. Still, the back-and-forth action continued the whole way in a set which saw 14 ties and five lead changes.
Matautia was unstoppable in the set with eight kills to zero errors, two of which helped the Owls go from three down at 20-17 to just one down at 20-19. Temple later had the first set point at 24-23, which Syracuse was able to fight off, but after an error on the Orangewomen, Connatser put down a kill to end the set in Temple's favor.
The offense just wasn't there for the Owls in the second set, as they were plagued by errors and Syracuse took the set by a score of 25-12.
In the third set Temple hung around until the end, but Syracuse hitters came up with three kills in the final four points to take the set, 25-22. The fourth set was nearly identical at the end, but the Owls had a lead midway through which they let slip away.
Syracuse was able to overpower the Owls at the net, recording 15.5 team blocks to Temple's four.
In the later match against Long Island, errors cost the Owls a close first set, but they ran away with the second set, hitting an impressive .424 as a team to the Blackbirds' .152.
With the third set tied at 15-15, Long Island began to pull away and went on to record a hitting percentage of .519 in the set with 16 kills and just two errors.
The final set was close near the end, but once again a few extra errors by the Owls proved costly. Long Island's Hanna Gibeau finished with a match-high 21 kills for the Blackbirds, who also finished with 14.5 team blocks to Temple's five.
Temple will be back on the road for its next match, a 7:00 p.m. contest at Delaware on Tuesday, Sept. 13.
