PHILADELPHIA - Monmouth's Patricia O'Dwyer scored on a penalty corner with three seconds remaining to hand the Temple field hockey team a heartbreaking, 2-1 loss at Geasey Field on Sunday afternoon. The Owls fall to 3-7 overall, while Monmouth improves to 7-4.
Although shots on goal were even in the first half, Monmouth struck first with 10 minutes left in the first half, Monmouth had three penalty corner opportunities compared to two for Temple, and made one of them count. The Hawks' Alex Carroll scored on a corner with assists from Morganne Firmstone and Melissa Murphy.
The goal was the only one scored in the first half, as Monmouth took their 1-0 lead into the break.
Temple tied the game with 15 minutes remaining in regulation on a tip-in after a corner, as Tori Cox scored with an assist from Emily Fuertsch.
The score stayed knotted and the game looked to be headed to overtime when the Hawks got a penalty corner opportunity and scored with just seconds on the clock.
