Amber Youtz Scores the Overtime Game-Winner in Field Hockey's 4-3 Victory Over Lock Haven
10.14.12 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA – Amber Youtz and Nicole Kroener teamed up for Temple field hockey's game-winning goal less than two minutes into overtime as the Owls defeated visiting Lock Haven, 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. The goal was Youtz's second of the game, and lifted Temple (10-6, 3-0) to its fourth straight win.
The Owls remain unbeaten in Atlantic 10 play, while Lock Haven moves to 10-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
With 45 points on the season, Youtz now stands alone in eighth place all-time at Temple in single-season points. Scoring her 18th goal of the season today, Youtz is now tied for 10th all-time in single season goals.
“This was a great overtime win for us,” said head coach Amanda Janney. “We haven't gone to overtime in a while, and Lock Haven did a great job to come back and put us under pressure. Our girls fought hard today and it paid off with a great win.”
The Owls looked to be the heavy favorite to win the game after a strong first half. Youtz scored in the fourth minute to put Temple on the board on a rebounded shot and save, and the Owls went on to lead 3-0 before the Bald Eagles' first goal.
In the 14th minute, Katie Briglia scored from the right side off a pass from Youtz for a 2-0 lead, and 12 minutes later Erin VanHorn deflected a shot by Kroener into the back of the cage.
Just a couple minutes before halftime, Lock Haven got one goal back on a corner as Taylor Kennedy scored with an assist by Kelly Harsh.
Lock Haven goalkeeper Elaina White made things tough for Temple in the second half, getting nine of her 11 total saves. At the same time, her team got into the game offensively, scoring twice over a four-minute span.
Nakira Downes took the ball downfield on a breakaway and beat Lizzy Millen one-on-one for the Eagles' second goal in the 41st minute, and Stephanie Ebersole tied the game four minutes later when she deflected a shot by Harsh on a corner play.
Millen helped the game stay undecided in regulation with a few key saves in the final minutes, while White also stayed strong in goal for Lock Haven.
With the seven-on-seven overtime format, Temple quickly got an opportunity and made the most of it, as a quick pass from Kroener found the stick of Youtz for the game-winner.
“Amber had two amazing goals today,” said Janney. “She really worked hard out there and created so much attack for us and we're really proud of her for getting the game-winning goal. She got knocked down really hard and got hurt pretty bad, but she toughened up and got back in there. She's just a fighter and we want all of our players to be that tough and that aggressive.”
Temple will return to action at home next Friday, Oct. 19 in a 3:00 p.m. game against Saint Louis.
