#17 Richmond Uses Late Second-Half Run to Defeat Temple Field Hockey, 4-1

10.21.12 | Field Hockey

RICHMOND, Va.  – After leading the game 1-0 all the way up to the 58th minute, Temple field hockey fell victim to a quick string of goals from #17 Richmond as the Spiders wound up with a 4-1 win. Both teams entered the game undefeated in the Atlantic 10, with Richmond now remaining so at 5-0 while the Owls fall to 4-1.

Temple (11-7, 4-1) had its five-game win streak snapped, while Richmond's late run gave the Spiders (13-4, 5-0) their eighth straight victory.

Both teams were scoreless for the first 25 minutes of the game, during which time Temple goalkeeper Lizzy Millen made three of her eventual six saves. At 25:44 of the first half, Lauren Hunt tipped in a ball off an assist from Katie Briglia for a 1-0 Temple lead, which would stand for more than 30 minutes.

The highly physical contest saw two green cards for the Owls in the first half, and one for Richmond. Both teams were given a yellow card early in the second half, and the Spiders would eventually earn yet another yellow card.

In the 43rd minute, Richmond was awarded a penalty stroke but the shot by Rebecca Barry was saved by Millen.

Just after Richmond's second yellow card expired in the 56th minute, Barry evened the score at 1-1 after sending in a ball that had ricocheted off Millen. Just 39 seconds later, Barry dealt Temple another blow with her second goal of the game, putting Richmond ahead 2-1 with just over 12 minutes to play.

The run would continue with another goal in that same minute by Chelsea Davies, with an assist from Taylor Dietrick for a 3-1 lead.

The Owls put in kicking back Sydney Hibshman with three minutes to play, but in the final minute it was Richmond who scored again as Natalie Gallo took an assist from Jackie Gyger and got one past Hibshman.

Temple's next game will pit the Owls against the other top team in the A-10, #19 Massachusetts. That contest is slated for 3:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26. Temple returns home on Oct. 28 against Saint Joseph's for Katie Briglia Day, which will honor the Owls' lone senior.
