Field Hockey Takes Down Saint Louis, 5-1, Winning Fifth Straight and Remaining Undefeated in the Atlantic 10

10.19.12 | Field Hockey

l Interview with Coach Amanda Janney

PHILADELPHIA – The offensive power of Temple field hockey was on display yet again as the Owls cruised to a 5-1 win over visiting Saint Louis on Friday afternoon at Geasey Field. Amber Youtz scored twice, bringing her season total to 20 goals as she helped Temple remain undefeated in the Atlantic 10 at 4-0.

The Owls are now 11-6 overall and have won five straight. They will face their sixth nationally-ranked team of the season on Sunday when they travel to Richmond for a 1:00 p.m. contest.

For the third time in as many games, Youtz scored the first goal for Temple in the first five and a half minutes of action. On a breakaway just over five minutes in, Youtz beat Saint Louis goalkeeper Tori Westhead one-on-one for a goal that would prove to be the game-winner.

Temple earned five penalty corners in the first half, and the fourth paid off as Nicole Kroener was in perfect position next to the cage to take a feed from Katie Briglia and give the Owls a 2-0 lead.

Just before halftime, the Billikens (1-14, 0-4) got a penalty corner goal of their own when Lexie Lindblad redirected a shot by Caiti Brownell.

Saint Louis had a few more offensive opportunities in the second half after taking just two shots in the first, but Temple goalkeeper Haley Mitchell stayed strong in the cage and held the Billikens scoreless. She finished the game with three saves, including two in the second half.

Youtz extended Temple's lead with her second goal of the game in the 40th minute on an assist from Lauren Hunt. For the Owls' fourth goal, it was Youtz with the assist to freshman Tricia Light who recorded the first goal of her Temple career in the 50th minute.

Temple led 4-1 for nearly 20 minutes, but put one more goal on the board before it was all over. Briglia lifted the ball into the cage on a perfect corner play with less than three minutes remaining, thanks to assists from Kroener on the input and Mandi Shearer with the stick stop.

“This game was great for us,” said head coach Amanda Janney. “We have some really outstanding underclassmen and we want them to get more playing time to get them ready for the A-10 Tournament. We're excited for our young players and our freshmen were awesome today.”

The Owls will now travel to face Richmond, currently ranked 17th in the national poll. Both teams are undefeated in conference play heading into Sunday's contest.
