PHILADELPHIA – Lauren Hunt's game-winning goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation lifted Temple field hockey to a 2-1 win over VCU in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams. The Owls (7-6, 1-0) had led 1-0 for most of the game until the Rams (8-3, 0-1) tied the score with four minutes left.

“To win the first A-10 game is huge,” said head coach Amanda Janney. “We've really had our focus on A-10's all season. This puts us in a great position. We're 1-0 in the conference and we're moving forward. We had a great non-conference schedule and played some top 10 teams and I really think we have our team prepared to go far this year.”

The game was light on offensive chances for both teams, as possession changed hands back and forth primarily in the midfield. Temple finished with 10 total shots to VCU's seven, and the Rams earned three penalty corners while the Owls had just one.

Amber Youtz, who ranks sixth in the nation in goals per game, recorded her 14th of the season less than six minutes into the game. Youtz scored on a spin move with a pass from just outside the circle by Nicole Kroener, who recorded the assist.

“For our team to get a goal early in the first half was great for us. That's something that we've struggled with in a couple games. It relieved a little bit of pressure and allowed us to move the ball around and pass a little bit more poised like we want to.”

The 1-0 lead would stand for the next 60 minutes of action. In that time, VCU's Megan Botteri recorded four saves while Temple's Lizzy Millen made three.

On their third and final penalty corner of the game in the 66th minute, the Rams' Kelsey Scherrer scored to tie the contest at 1-1.

The Owls stayed composed and when the next chance came to put the game away, they did just that. Katie Briglia fed a perfect pass to Hunt who shot from the left side into the right corner of the cage, giving Temple a 2-1 lead with just 1:42 left in the game.

VCU pulled its goalkeeper in favor of a kicking back, but there were no shots recorded for either team in the remaining time.

Temple returns to action at home tomorrow for its final non-conference game of the regular season as the Owls take on Radford at 1:00 p.m.
