PHILADELPHIA – Five different players scored as Temple field hockey set the pace early on and defeated visiting Radford by a score of 5-1 on Saturday afternoon at Geasey Field. It took less than 15 seconds of action for Katie Briglia to score Temple's first goal, and it would prove to be the game-winner.
The Owls (8-6) took possession on the opening whistle and moved right down the field. Briglia, after a pass from Amber Youtz, dribbled and dove towards goal, scoring just 13 seconds into the game.
Youtz would then go on to score in the 12th minute, notching her 15th goal of the season by taking the ball through the circle and beating the goalkeeper one-one-one.
The 2-0 lead was short-lived as Radford scored on its next possession just 20 seconds after Temple's goal. Jana Bayer hit a slow-rolling shot that found its way into the cage to put the Highlanders within one, but Temple soon widened the gap yet again.
In the 16th minute, Molly Doyle scored her first goal of the season on a penalty corner play. Briglia fed Doyle on a give-and-go after the initial insert on the corner, and Doyle hit it in from the top left of the circle for a 3-1 Temple lead.
The Owls would get one more first half goal with three minutes remaining, as freshman Erin VanHorn scored the first goal of her collegiate career after a rebounded shot and save.
The scoring pace slowed significantly in the second half, despite an increase for Temple in both shots and penalty corner opportunities. Radford called a timeout in the 53rd minute which allowed both teams to regroup, and Temple head coach Amanda Janney encouraged the Owls to play more aggressively. The team responded, and with 10 minutes left in the game a corner paid off as Lauren Hunt scored her second goal of the weekend on Briglia's second assist of the game.
Temple has now completed its non-conference schedule with a winning record of 7-6. The Owls are 8-6 overall after an Atlantic 10 win over VCU, and will play only league games from here on out in the regular season. Next up for Temple is a nearby road game at La Salle on Friday, Oct. 12 at 3:30 p.m.
