Field Hockey Stays Perfect in Atlantic 10 Play With a 2-1 Win at La Salle

PHILADELPHIA (La Salle) – Amber Youtz scored the game-winner and broke into the record books for Temple (9-6, 2-0) as the field hockey team stayed perfect in the Atlantic 10 with a 2-1 win at La Salle (6-8, 1-1) on Friday afternoon. With 40 points so far this season, Youtz now stands in 10th place all-time on the single-season points list for Temple.
Scoring the first goal of the game less than five minutes in after making a nice move inside the circle, Youtz recorded what would prove to be the game-winner as well as notching her 16th goal of the season. She later assisted on the Owls' second goal, bringing her season assist total to eight.
“We're so happy for Amber,” said head coach Amanda Janney. “She doesn't know yet that she's broken into the record books but she's just an outstanding scorer for us. As a sophomore she's already getting recognition being one of the top scorers in the nation, and now she's one of the leaders in scoring at Temple where we've had a history of great alumni playing for us. The fact that Amber is now in the top 10 (in a single season) is really positive for our program.”
The early 1-0 lead stood until near the mid-point of the second half. Both teams had three penalty corner opportunities in the first half, but were unable to convert.
La Salle's best chance to even the score came in the 25th minute when the Explorers were awarded a penalty stroke, but the shot went just wide. Just before the stroke, Temple's Taylor Shronk made a key defensive save on a corner for La Salle. Lizzy Millen made six first-half saves for Temple (seven overall) while La Salle's Lisa Shaffer also had six saves in the first period.
The Explorers and the Owls each put up six shots in the second period, but scored on just once apiece.
Temple made it a 2-0 game in the 49th minute when Youtz took the ball down the field on a fast break, and one-timed a perfect pass to Lauren Hunt who found the back of the cage.
With seven minutes remaining, La Salle came within a goal on a pass inside the circle from Mariel Papa to Olivia Shoemaker, but the Owls held strong the rest of the way to maintain the lead.
“Today was a great win for us,” said Janney. “La Salle is a great team and they really fought hard and did a great job in the second half to answer back and put us under pressure. We're so happy to get a second win in the A-10. VCU is a great team and so is La Salle, so to be 2-0 in the conference moving forward is a really positive position for us.”
Temple will be back in action at home on Sunday, Oct. 14 in a 1:00 p.m. game against A-10 foe Lock Haven.
