Pat Peterson Claims First Win In Owls' 8-4 Defeat Of Maryland Eastern Shore

3.10.12 | Baseball

Owls host Iona Sunday at Noon

Box Score

AMBLER
– Freshman southpaw Patrick Peterson notched his first collegiate victory on Saturday afternoon, while Temple's offense was hard to handle once again, as it defeated the University of Maryland Eastern Shore by a count of 8-4 at Skip Wilson Field. With their second straight win, the Owls are 5-8 on the year and look to close out their first home weekend series on Sunday when they host Iona at Noon.

Peterson pitched a season-high 7.0 innings and looked solid all the way through, striking out four batters, while allowing two runs on seven hits.

With the Owls leading 6-0 in the fourth inning, UMES put up a threat, as it setup with runners on the corners with two outs. Despite allowing the Hawks to get on the board on a base hit by James Newsome that scored Shaquille Bagwell, Peterson limited the damage, getting Franklin Armstrong to fly out.

In the sixth, Peterson found himself in another threatening situation with runners on the corner, but again, he would find his way out of the inning despite surrendering a run.

After seeing his hitting streak come to a close on Friday, senior Taylor Juran singled to second base in the second inning to begin the Owls attack over the next three frames.

Sophomore right fielder Connor Reilly began a 3-for-4 day by belting a pitch all the way to the warning track in right field to score Juran to give the Owls the lead.

Reilly extended the lead for the Owls when he trotted home when junior Henry Knabe grounded into a fielder's choice.

In each of the next two innings, Temple would pelt two runs on the board, giving itself a 6-0 lead.

Following Friday's big day at the plate, redshirt senior Steve Nikorak and junior Elijah Yarborough were offensive catalysts in the middle of the order for the Owls once again.

Yarborough collected three runs batted in on his 2-for-3 afternoon, having two singles, a sacrifice fly and being hit by a pitch.

Nikorak reached base for the 13th consecutive game. After having nine total bases on Friday against Central Connecticut State, the Stroudsburg, Pa. native collected seven more on Saturday off UMES pitching, going 2-for-3 with a triple, a double and two walks.

In the third inning, Nikorak smacked his second triple of the weekend after freshman Nick Lustrino led off the inning with a single. Lustrino, who had his team-leading seventh multi-hit game of the season by going 3-for-5, scored on the play to give the Owls a three-run advantage at that point.

Replacing Peterson in the eighth, redshirt freshman Ryan Kuehn took over the mound for the Owls and pitched the final 2.0 innings, where he let up two runs on four hits and struck out one.
