RICHMOND, Va. – In their first midweek matchup of the season, the Temple Owls took on the Virginia Commonwealth Rams under the lights of The Diamond, where they were handed a 6-3 loss on Tuesday evening.

The Owls got out to an early start, putting up two runs in the opening frame.

Freshman Nick Lustrino continued his consistent hitting during the current road trip, as he ripped a base hit to get the offensive rally started for Temple.

Redshirt senior Steve Nikorak pounded out a base hit into center field to extend his streak of reaching base safely to 10 consecutive games before senior
Taylor Juran prolonged his hitting streak to 10 straight games, as he doubled  to left center field to score Lustrino and Nikorak.

Juranis b atting .316 and has at least one hit in every ballgame this season.

The Rams responded, but not until the second inning when they pulled within a run.

VCU went on to take the lead in the third inning, scoring two runs on three hits off of Owls' starter Dan Moller.

The Rams tied the score at two when Bill Cullen came around on a wild pitch, which moved Jordan Weyworth to third base, where he trotted home from later in the inning to put the Rams on top.

Temple answered in the fifth inning when Jordan Queja singled with two runners aboard. Matt Elko scored on the base hit to deadlock the score at three apiece.

When VCU went to the dish in its half of the fifth, it would take control for good, putting up a three-spot in the inning to go on top, 6-3 after Brent Mikionis belted a three-run home run.

The Owls were held off from making a comeback as VCU relief pitchers Heath Dwyer and Blake Hauser  held them to just one hit over the final three innings.

With the loss, Temple drops to 3-7 on the year. The Owls have little time for turnaround as they are slated to close out its five-game road trip at George Mason on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. Brant Norlander will have the ball for the Owls.
