BRONX, N.Y. - Temple gets back to Atlantic 10 Conference play this weekend when it opens up a three-game series in the Bronx, N.Y. with the Fordham Rams. Due to the Easter/Passover holiday weekend, the series will be played out in two days: Friday at 11 a.m and a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at Noon. All three games will be webstreamed and will have live stats provided. As always, follow @Temple_Baseball on Twitter for up-to date in-depth coverage.
The Owls (12-16, 0-3) are coming off a home loss to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks on Wednesday. Freshman Nick Lustrino ripped three of the team's 13 hits, but it wasn't enough to tame Lehigh in the 8-5 deficit. In the game, redshirt senior Steve Nikorak collected his 190th and 191st career hits to slip into the school's all-time record for career hits. Nikorak, who will make the 150th start of his Temple career on Friday, passed John Marzano on the all-time hits list and now sits tied in ninth place with Joe Lyall.
Seniors Jabair Khan and Taylor Juran are riding hit streaks coming into the series. Khan has hit his way on base in the last four contests, building an average of .538 in that span. The Owls' center fielder has had five extra-base hits during the streak (four doubles and a triple).
All three of Temple's starting pitchers are coming off solid performances. Senior Dan Moller went a season-long 6.0 IP last week at Monmouth, striking out a career-high six batters. Sophomore Matt Hockenberry notched his fourth win of the season in the series clincher against Monmouth last Sunday, while Patrick Peterson makes his first start after nearly throwing a no-hitter back on March 24 at Saint Louis.
Ryan Maghini is one of three players to start all 29 games for Fordham this season. In action, he is second on the team with a .278 batting average, but leads the team with 15 runs scored, three home runs, 16 runs batted in, 44 total bases, while being tied with Mike Mauri with 30 hits. Mauri leads the team with a .286 batting average.
On the mound for Fordham this weekend, Daniel Munday will be in search of his second in of the season on Friday. In Saturday's doubleheader, Chris Pike looks to stay perfect, having a 2-0 record on the year with the lowest ERA among starters at 3.99 through his seven starts. Joseph Charest, who has two complete games on his line this season, will pitch the rubber match in game two on the day. Jeremy Adel has been relied on for relief 13 times this year, having a record of 2-1 with an ERA of 1.80 on the year.
Fordham holds the advantage in the all-time series with a record of 21-39-0. Temple and Fordham have not met since 2009 in the final weekend of the season. In that series, the Rams swept the Owls in the Bronx at Houlihan Park. Fordham has won the last eight meeting between the two teams. The last time the Owls defeated the Rams was back on May 4, 2007. The last time the Owls took a series from Fordham was back in 2001--ironically, during Easter weekend. Temple swept the three-game set at Fordham, which was also played within two days.
