Field Hockey Heads to Longwood and #4 Maryland for Non-Conference Action This Weekend

9.27.12 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - Looking to keep its win streak alive, Temple field hockey will play its final two non-conference road games this weekend at Longwood and #4 Maryland. The Owls will play at Longwood at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, and will face defending national champ #4 Maryland on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 1:00 p.m.

Live stats for the Longwood game will be available HERE, and live stats for Sunday's game at Maryland will be available HERE.

The Owls are on a hot streak, scoring 17 total goals in their last three games and winning them all. Atlantic 10 Player of the Week Amber Youtz notched back-to-back hat tricks in a 7-3 win vs. Colgate and a 5-4 come-from-behind win at Bucknell. She became the first Temple player to record at least three goals in back-to-back games since Jane Catanzaro did it in 1990.

Youtz, who leads Temple with 12 goals and six assists, is currently ranked sixth among all players in NCAA Division I in goals per game (1.20) and is tied for fifth in points per game (3.00). Freshman Alyssa Delp ranks second on the team with six goals, while Lauren Hunt and Nicole Kroener have scored four goals apiece.

As a team, Temple leads the Atlantic 10 in goals scored with 31 (3.10 goals per game). Youtz leads all A-10 players in goals and points while ranking second in assists, and Delp is tied for third in goals but ranks first with three game-winning goals. Goalkeeper Lizzy Millen ranks third in the A-10 in saves per game at 5.80.

Longwood is 2-8 overall and coming off a 5-2 loss to A-10 powerhouse Richmond. Both Stacey deGrandhomme and Jessica Diaz have scored six goals to lead the Lancers, while Jennifer Burris has five.

Maryland, defending national champ and winner of five of the last seven national titles, is 7-1 overall. The Terrapins' lone loss was to #3 Old Dominion, 2-1. They have since won five straight including a 4-2 victory over #14 Wake Forest on Sept. 22. Junior Ali McEvoy has scored seven goals to lead Maryland, while junior Jill Witmer is tops on the team in points with five goals and six assists. Coach Missy Meharg is a nine-time national coach of the year and currently in her 25th year with the Terps.

Temple will return home next Friday, Oct. 5 to play its first Atlantic 10 game against new conference member VCU at 3:00 p.m. The Owls will face non-conference foe Radford the next day in their last non-conference game of the regular season.
