Field Hockey Comes From Behind Again in a 5-3 Win at Longwood; Owls Have Now Won Four Straight

9.28.12 | Field Hockey

FARMVILLE, Va. - For the second game in a row, the Temple field hockey team came from behind and got a win on the road, this time by a score of 5-3 at Longwood (2-9). The Owls, who have now won four straight and improve to 6-5 overall, got the game-winner from Nicole Kroener with less than 10 minutes remaining. Amber Youtz added an insurance goal with just over four minutes left in the contest.

Alyssa Delp was the leader along with Kroener, as each scored two goals. Delp helped Temple out of a 3-1 hole in the second half. She scored both the second and third goals of the game for the Owls over a three-minute span starting in the 57th minute.

“Longwood was a good team and put us under a lot of pressure that we had trouble dealing with in the first half,” said head coach Amanda Janney. “It took us a half to adjust and then we picked it up in the second. The girls had a great attitude the whole way and just never gave up. It was one of those games where we just out-worked them in the second half and that hard work paid off. It wasn't pretty but the girls kept fighting and hustling and found a way to score.”

Longwood's Jessica Diaz scored the only goal of the first half near the midway point, getting a deflection off a Temple defender and putting it in the back corner of the goal.

Temple was awarded a penalty stroke less than three minutes into the second half, and Kroener converted the stroke to tie the game at 1-1. The tie was short-lived as Longwood's Nicole Segala scored on a corner play just two minutes later for a 2-1 lead. Stacey deGrandhomme, who had assisted on Segala's goal, scored her own 10 minutes later off a rebounded shot on a corner. The goal gave Longwood a 3-1 lead with 20 minutes remaining, but the Owls kept the pressure on.

In the 57th minute, Delp took a pass from Sydney Hibshman on a breakaway to put Temple within a goal. Less than three minutes later, Delp deflected a hard shot from outside the circle by Kroener, scoring again while Kroener recorded the assist.

The game-winner came during the same stretch, just two minutes after Delp's second goal as Katie Briglia's shot was tipped-in by Kroener in the 62nd minute. Youtz put in the final goal of the game at 65:42, dribbling past a falling goalkeeper to score on an open net.

The Owls will remain on the road, traveling to #4 Maryland on Sunday, Sept. 30 for a 1:00 p.m. game.
