Field Hockey's Hot Streak Ends at the Hands of #4 Maryland

9.30.12 | Field Hockey

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Owls played the fourth-ranked Maryland Terrapins nearly evenly in the second half, but the hole was too big to climb out of as Temple field hockey ultimately lost 6-0 on the road Sunday afternoon. Maryland, the two-time defending national champ, improves to 8-2 while Temple, which had its four-game win streak snapped, now stands at 6-6.

Both teams recorded 11 shots in the second half, and after trailing 5-0 at halftime the Owls allowed Maryland just a single goal in the second half. Temple had two penalty corner opportunities in the second, but Terps' keeper Brooke Cabrera made six second-half saves. Her teammate Natalie Hunter played the entire first half in the cage for Maryland.

Temple goalkeeper Lizzy Millen made nine saves, and Haley Mitchell replaced her for the final 18 minutes and recorded three saves.

Katie Gerzabek scored the game's first goal in the fifth minute, and also notched another goal in the first half for Maryland. Four other players scored for the Terps, with both Megan Frazer and Jill Witner getting a goal and an assist. After three goals in the first 14 minutes, Temple's defense tightened up. They allowed just two more goals over a four-minute stretch late in the first half, and only one in the second half.

The Owls greatly increased their time of possession in the second half, recording two shots early and another four shots over a two-minute stretch midway through the half. The final 10 minutes saw another five shots for Temple, many of  those coming on two penalty corner opportunities, but they were unable to prevent the shutout and get one past Cabrera. Senior Katie Briglia gave herself the most chances for the Owls, getting three shots on goal.

Temple's next game will mark the start of Atlantic 10 action, as the Owls host new member VCU on Friday, Oct. 5 at 3:00 p.m.
