BETHLEHEM, Pa. – It was a historical race for Temple Men's Cross Country on Friday morning at the 39th Annual Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University. Led by the sixth-best overall time from redshirt senior Travis Mahoney, the Owls went on to place 19th out of 37 teams running in the Gold 8k race, to pick up the program highest-ever finish at the annual meet.
"Travis raced really well for this being his first race of the season," assistant coach Adam Bray said. "He knocked the rust off his legs right away and he pulled in front of the group and led our team today. I am very pleased with how the team handled the situation today and it is a very positive sign to see where we're headed as a team."
While Villanova took home the title with a first place time of 2:02:09, Temple's top seven runners combined for a time of 2:07:19 to earn 518 place points, which spurred it to its first-ever placement inside the top 20 of the Paul Short Invitational.
Running cross country for the first time since the 2010 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals, Mahoney ignited the Owls to a record-setting day with his time of 24:19.
Returning to the slopes after winning a meet title last time out, sophomore Cullen Davis set a new personal best and pulled into the finish line with Temple's second-fastest time at 24:53 to place 44th overall.
"Cullen was huge for us today and he had a big PR," Bray said. "To finish in the top 50 of this race, where there is a lot of high-level national competition, it is very impressive."
Junior Will Kellar came away with the Owls' third quickest time, as he croissed the finish line in 25:46; ahead of sophomore Matt Kacyon (25:51) and junior Phil Fanz (26:31), who placed fourth and fifth for Temple, respectively.
Two runners that are really coming along since being added to this year's sqaud have been sophomore Timothy Collins (26:56) and freshman Steve Flynn (27:02, as they contributed to the Owls' 19th place finish was the Owls' sixth and seventh top finish times on the day.
In just two races with newly-hired assistance from Adam Bray, the Owls have won a meet title and have now set a program-best finish at a race it has competed in every year since 2006.
