PHILADELPHIA – Temple put an end to its first regular season losing streak in four seasons Saturday evening by defeating the Saint Louis Billikens, 64-54, in its Atlantic 10 Conference home opener at The Liacouras Center.
Senior Khalif Wyatt was a game-high scorer for the fifth time this season with 24 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including an effective 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Anthony Lee, who entered the game leading the team in shooting (.532), went 8-of-13 from the field against the Billikens (12-4, 1-1), in scoring 20 points. He also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds for his third career double-double.
Playing at home where they have won 39 of their last 41 games, Temple used the energy of the crowd to jump out to an early 15-12 lead. The Owls would extend it to 34-28 against the A10's best defensive squad to 34-26 at the break on the strength of 13-of-24 shooting from the field (54.2%).
The Billikens clamped down on the defensive end in the second half, holding the Owls to just six points over the first nine minutes. Temple was equally as stingy and held a 40-37 advantage when Wyatt drained his second trey of the game and Will Cummings added a jumper to make it a eight-point game (45-37) with just under 10 minutes to play.
SLU would not draw within a single possession the remainder of the contest, but Temple was also not able to push the contest to double figures before a Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson slam with 15 seconds remaining ended the scoring in the game.
Wyatt, who has provided the heroics in quite a few games this season, helped close the win out with a huge three with 2:19 remaining. He then made four-of-four free throws in the final 1:12 to seal the victory.
The 6-4 guard, who had his streak of 32 consecutive free throws snapped in the first half, finished with game seven-of-10 from the charity stripe.
Junior Rob Loe led the Billikens, who saw their nine-game win streak snapped, with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Dwayne Evans added a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with his nine points.
Temple limited Saint Louis to 34.5 percent shooting on the game while forcing 13 Billiken turnovers.
The Owls, now 11-4 on the year and with an even 1-1 record in A-10 play, travel to the nation's capital Wednesday to take on George Washington. Tip-off time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Charles E. Smith Center. The game will be televised locally on Comcast SportsNet and can be heard on 1210 WPHT AM.—MORE TO COME—
