#17 Field Hockey Drops a Tough, 1-0 Decision to #20 Old Dominion

PHILADELPHIA - Despite 11 saves from goalkeeper Lizzy Millen, #17 Temple field hockey fell short against #20 Old Dominion, 1-0, in a BIG EAST match-up at Geasey Field on Sunday afternoon. Both teams entered the game with a 3-1 record in conference play. The Owls now stand at 10-4 overall and in fourth place in the conference at 3-2, while ODU is 7-6 overall and stands in second place in the BIG EAST at 4-1.
"Every time we walk on the field we want a tough competitor," said Temple head coach Amanda Janney. "ODU played really well today but we didn't get enough attack off and they put us under pressure defensively."
Almost 18 minutes into play, Rosario Villagra scored her ninth goal of the season for ODU. Tipped off a defender's stick, she slap shot the ball into the net for what would prove to be the only goal of the day.
The Owls did not have a shot on goal until the second half. With pressure inside the circle from Old Dominion defenders, the Owls had few chances to earn a scoring opportunity.
The Monarchs finished with 13 shots on goal, while the Owls had five.
In the last two and a half minutes of play, Millen was taken out of the game and Rachel Steinman was brought in as a kicking back for the Owls, but Temple was unable to get a shot off in the remaining time.
Temple now has two BIG EAST opponents left to play in the regular season. Four teams will advance to the BIG EAST Tournament, and the Owls currently sit alone in fourth place, a half game back from Louisville (3-1).
The Owls are back in action on Friday, October 18 at Geasey Field against Appalachian State. It will be Alumni Day as well as Play 4 The Cure Day, and fans are encouraged to wear pink to support breast cancer awareness.
