2013 BIG EAST Field Hockey Tournament Bracket l Temple Game Notes

PHILADELPHIA - For the 11th-straight year, Temple field hockey has earned a conference tournament berth, but 2013 will be the Owls' first-ever appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament. Fourth-seeded and 19th-ranked Temple (14-5) will face top-seeded and seventh-ranked Connecticut (14-4) in a semifinal contest on Friday, Nov. 8 at 5:00 p.m.

Connecticut will serve as the host of the tournament at its George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex, and the other semifinal at 7:30 p.m. will feature second-seeded Old Dominion vs. third-seeded Louisville.

The winner of each game will advance to the BIG EAST Championship game on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 1:00 p.m.

Each of the other three teams finished at 6-1 in the league to claim a share of the title, but UConn was awarded the top seed after the tie-breaking procedure, based on goal differential. Temple finished conference play at 4-3, with the three losses coming to each of the other teams in the tournament.

Temple will face a tough test against the Huskies after losing to them 7-0 on Nov. 2, but it will be a chance for the Owls to avenge that loss. Temple's games against ODU and Louisville were far closer, as the Owls lost 2-1 to Louisville in overtime, and 1-0 to ODU.

Heading into this weekend's tournament, Temple is ranked #19 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll. The Owls are now ranked for a ninth straight week since their first appearance in the poll back on Sept. 10.

Temple was picked to finish sixth of eight teams in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches Poll, but exceeded expectations by finishing fourth and earning a berth in its first-ever BIG EAST Tournament. The postseason is nothing new for the Owls, who had advanced to 10 straight Atlantic 10 Tournaments prior to this season.

Ninth-year head coach Amanda Janney has been at the helm for eight of those tournaments, and on Oct. 27, Janney recorded her 100th career victory in the Owls' 3-2 win at Lafayette.
