CARY, N.C. – Temple Baseball got its 85th season underway on Friday afternoon at the USA Baseball Complex Classic with a pair of losses. Opening the 2012 campaign, the Owls fell to Wright State, 8-3, and to Delaware by a count of 8-4.
Game 1:
In its season-opener against the Raiders of Wright State, all of Temple's offense came courtesy of the long-ball.
After Wright State found a way to tack on runs in four straight innings (2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th), the Owls trailed by eight runs before they finally got on the board in the top of the eighth inning.
Redshirt sophomore Connor Reilly, who had three hits between the two games, came up with TU's first run of the season when he slammed a ball over the left field fence. Two batters later, Nick Lustrino, who got his sophomore season started, smashed his first career homer and narrowed the gap to an 8-2 Wright State lead.
Looking to get a rally going in the ninth, senior Henry Knabe took hold of a pitch and drilled it over the center field wall to bring the Owls within five runs, but that would as close as they would come.
Senior Dan Moller was the first pitcher to toe the rubber for the Owls in 2013. In his Opening Day start, he lasted 3.1 innings, in which he surrendered six runs on seven hits, while striking out two hitters and issuing four walks in the process.
The Raiders most productive inning came in the second when Mark Fowler scored on a sacrifice fly after being hit by a pitch and snagging second base. With the bases loaded later in the frame, Cody Phillips crossed the dish on Beau Phillips' two-base hit. Wright State capped a three-run inning when Josh Brodner rushed home on Michael Timm's ground out.
Wright State came up with a pair of runs in the third before tacking on one in the fourth and fifth innings.
While three players made their collegiate debut (freshmen Andrew Nist, Frank D'Agostino and Connor Staskey) three more made their first appearance into a ballgame since 2011.
Redshirt junior Dan Dragos entered his first game since May 21, 2011 when he was called don to pinch hit in the top of the ninth inning for D'Agostino. Zach Batchelor, a redshirt sophomore, relieved Moller in the fourth inning and went on to throw 1.2 innings, through which he gave up two runs on four hits, while fanning away two hitters in his first appearance since May 14, 2011.
Redshirt sophomore Zach White had the most impressive return of the three, as he came on to pitch the final two innings of the game for the Owls. White, who struck out one and walked one, did not allow a hit or a run in his first time back on the hill since May 1, 2011.
Of the rookies that made their debut in game one on the day, Staskey showed solid potential, as he allowed no baserunners and struck out two in his only inning of work, which occurred during the eighth.
Game 2:
Trailing 8-2 in their final call to the plate, the Owls rallied to narrow the gap, as they started the inning with three straight singles from freshman Jimmy Kerrigan, Dragos and freshman Michael D'Acunti. Temple cut the lead to a four-run ballgame once Kerrigan tagged home on D'Acunti's hit. With two runners in scoring position after a wild pitch, freshmen Sean Arnott ripped a single to score Dragos to make it 8-4 in favor of Delaware, which is how it would stay.
Beginning his fifth season as member of the Temple baseball team, redshirt senior Steve Visnic came into the season-opener on the brink of Temple history. When he took over to pitch in the eighth inning against the Delaware Blue Hen, it marked the 84th time in his career that he had been called upon to pitch, putting him in a tie for the most appearances all-time with Temple Hall of Famer Peter Moore.
Before Visnic came on to pitch for the Owls, junior Preston Hill started the game and got his Temple career underway. The Chandler Gilbert Community College transfer lasted six innings in his Cherry & White debut. Before turning the ball over to redshirt junior Ryan Kuehn, Hill closed out his line with four strikeouts, three walks, while allowing five runs on six hits.
Wasting no time, the Blue Hens struck first, as they put the first crooked figure on the scoreboard in their half of the first inning when Joe Giacchino scored on Nick Ferdinand's double into left center.
The Owls deadlocked the score in the third inning when they matched Delaware's lone run when Lustrino made his way home on senior Allen Stiles' sac fly.
Delaware took Temple's momentum away by responding with two runs when it came back to the plate. With DJ Long already aboard, Jimmy Yezzo split one in the center field gap and rounded all the way to third to score Long. Yezzo was later brought home on another double by Ferdinand to give UD at 3-1 lead.
The Blue Hens continued to find ways to beat Hill, as they tacked on a run in the fourth and fifth innings.
Also making his debut since transferring to Temple, junior Derrick Peterson made his first start for the Owls at first base. In the sixth inning, Peterson, who walked three times in the game, led off the inning with a walk and later advanced on a wild pitch before scoring his first run for the team when Reilly slapped a pitch into right field.
UD would not let the Owls cut into the lead for too long. Leading 5-2, the Blue Hens boosted the lead to an 8-2 advantage. With two outs and the bases loaded EJ Stoltzfus reached base on a field error, forcing everyone aboard to move up, including Yezzo, who tacked on a run. Before the frame was over, Ty Warrington ripped a double of a pitch from Kuehn to score two more for the Blue Hens.
Temple (0-2) will continue play in the USA Baseball Complex Classic when it takes on Monmouth Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Junior right-hander Matt Hockenberry, the team's wins leader in 2012, will make his first start of the season against the Hawks.
