PHILADELPHIA – Temple and La Salle have met 112 previous times in men's basketball, but it has been quite some time since the game has had as much significance as Thursday's nationally-televised showdown at the Liacouras Center (7:00 p.m./CBS Sports Network/1210 AM WPHT). As expected tickets are moving fast for the contest and fans will be treated to Hatfield Dollar Dog Night at the game.
Both the Owls (17-8, 6-4 A10) and the Explorers (18-6, 8-3 A10) are looking to position themselves in the Atlantic 10 Conference standings as well as notch a key win for their NCAA resume. Temple is looking to secure its sixth straight appearance in March Madness while La Salle is in search of its first bid to the tournament since 1992.
Besides the Atlantic 10 Conference race, this game has Philadelphia Big 5 ramifications. La Salle (3-0 Big 5) has already clinched a share of the city-series title and is looking for its first outright Big 5 championship since 1990. Temple (2-1) will forge a tie for the title with a victory, extending its Big 5 record to 27 city-series championships.
In a game that has the setting for a classic Big 5 contest, Temple enters the night having played a school – and perhaps national – record five straight one-point games. All five nail-biters have come in the month of February for the Owls with the Cherry and White winning three, including Saturday's 83-82 decision at UMass.
Senior Khalif Wyatt, who shared Big 5 Player of the Week accolades with La Salle standout Ramon Galloway, led the Owls with 24 points against the Minutemen. It marked the fifth straight game, and 13th overall, that the 6-4 guard led all scorers.
Wyatt, who has averaged 25.2 points over the past 11 games, continues to pace the A10 with a 19.8 scoring average while leading the Owls in assists (4.0 apg.). Sophomore forward Anthony Lee (11.2 ppg.) leads TU in rebounding (7.5 rpg.) and field goal percentage (.542) while senior forward Scootie Randall (10.9 ppg., 6.0 rpg.) also averages double figures while ranking among the A10 leaders in minutes per game (34.5 mpg.).
Senior forward Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson (8.5 ppg., 5.3 rpg.), who nearly had Temple's first triple-double in over a decade at UMass (10 pts, 11 rebs, 8 ast), and sophomore Will Cummings (5.8 ppg.) round out the starting five for head coach Fran Dunphy's Owls.
Galloway leads La Salle head coach Dr. John Giannini's squad and ranks third in the A10 with a 17.3 scoring average. Junior guard Tyreek Duren (14.5 ppg.) runs the Explorers offense (3.4 apg.) while junior guard Tyrone Garland (12.0 ppg.) and sophomore forward Jerrell Wright (10.0 ppg., 6.5 rpg.) also average double figures.
Temple has won the last seven meetings with La Salle and leads the series 72-40. The Owls owns a 9-1 record in games played against the Explorers at the Liacouras Center. LU's last win in the series, however, came in the arena, 70-63, on Feb. 26, 2009.
