Stiles Goes 3-For-3 In Baseball's 3-0 Loss At Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. – Senior Allen Stiles went 3-for-3 in Temple's weekend series opener at Rhode Island, but the Owls mustered only one other hit and were held scoreless in a 3-0 blanking at Bill Beck Field on Friday afternoon.
Sophomore left-handed pitcher Patrick Peterson, who did not get support from his offense for a second straight game, gave up all three runs in URI's three-hit fifth inning. Peterson (1-5) took the loss, while URI's Mike Bradstreet (6-3) came away with the win and Bobby Dean notched his Atlantic 10-leading eighth save.
Redshirt senior Steve Visnic tossed his best outing of the season. The sidearm hurler threw a season-long 3.0 scoreless innings. Visnic, who is the program's all-time leader in appearances (96) has not allowed a run in any of his last three outings and has been charged with just one run in his last 8.0 innings of work.
Stiles pounded out Temple's first hit of the game when he led off the third inning with a base hit. With one out after a ground out by freshman Michael D'Acunti, senior Jordan Queja was issued a free pass to first base after being drilled by a pitch. Temple's threat would end when Stiles was caught stealing as sophomore Nick Lustrino swung through strike three.
Before URI got on the board, the Owls once again looked as if they were going to get something going. Freshman Frank D'Agostino was the second of two Temple players to hit his way on base when he delivered a leadoff single to open the fifth before Stiles made contact for a one-out base hit. Again with two on and one out, the Owls failed to score, as D'Acunti struck out and senior Elijah Yarborough ended the threat with a ground out.
Lustrino, D'Agostino and junior Derek Peterson all reached base courtesy of walks, but were stranded. Stiles completed a perfect day at the dish in the seventh when he doubled down the left field line.
After Patrick Peterson got URI's leadoff batter to ground out in the fifth inning, the Rams went on to get its next four batters on base. Chris Famiglietti was hit by a pitch and then Tim Caputo walked. With two aboard, Jeff Roy laced a single to break the scoreless bout and then Mike LeBel smacked a two-run double to give the Rams the 3-0 lead, which would stand for the remainder of the game.
Temple (14-18, 5-8 A-10) and URI (20-17, 7-3 A-10) will continue the weekend set with the series rubber match on Saturday afternoon beginning at 3:00 p.m. Sophomore Eric Peterson will be going for his sixth win of the season when he takes the mound for the Owls.
