PHILADELPHIA- The 17th-ranked Temple field hockey team won its fifth game in a row on Sunday afternoon at Geasey Field, shutting out Sacred Heart 3-0 to bring the Owls' overall record to 8-2. The Pioneers now move to 3-6 for the season.

Two of Temple's goals, earned in the first half, happened just over a minute from each other. Senior Lauren Hunt scored twice in the contest.

"Our defense played great," said head coach Amanda Janney.  "It was a lot about our attack getting a lot of shooting opportunities."

Just seven minutes into play, Molly Doyle set up Katie Foran, passing from the right side on a penalty corner play and Foran was able to swipe it into the back of the cage. After scoring her first two goals of the season against Rutgers two days ago, Foran added another goal to her season tally.

Just over a minute later, Temple caught the Sacred Heart goalkeeper out of position. Foran found Hunt on the right side and Hunt slid to tip the shot into the cage for her second goal of the season.

Despite many scoring opportunities on 12 penalty corners, the Owls' didn't see another goal until a couple of minutes into the second half. Hunt located a blocked shot rebound and tipped it into the net, giving Temple a 3-0 lead.

Although the scoring chances gave the Owls an edge, Sacred Heart goalkeeper Mary Altepeter saved 13 of Temple's 17 shots on goal.

The Owls' defensive unit kept the Pioneers out of the circle and away from shooting openings, giving Temple goalkeeper Lizzy Millen her third shutout of the season.

"We're very happy with a 3-0 win," said Janney. "Anytime we can get a shutout and keep them out of our attacking circle for a majority of the game, we're very happy with our team."

The Owls are back in action at Louisville next Friday, October 4 at 6:00 pm.
