HARTFORD, Conn. - UConn's DeAndre Daniels and Shabazz Napier combined for 58 points and put the game out of reach early on for Temple men's basketball, as the Owls suffered a 90-66 loss to the Huskies (15-4, 3-3) on Tuesday night at the XL Center.
The bright spot for Temple (5-12, 0-6) was the play of junior guard Will Cummings, who scored a team-high 20 points in his return to action after missing two games with concussion-like symptoms.
The Owls' Anthony Lee, currently the American Athletic Conference's leading rebounder at 9.5 rebounds per game, did not grab a single board all night despite scoring 14 points. The Huskies finished with a 45-25 edge on the glass, led by Daniels with 12 boards.
Daniels' 31 points were a career-high, and his effort was nearly matched by Napier, who put up 27 points along with a game-high six assists.
Temple had a promising start to the game, as Cummings hit a three-pointer in his first minute back on the court and the Owls would eventually take an 11-9 early lead. Cummings went on to score 12 first-half points, but the rest of the Owls did not fare as well.
The Huskies used a 9-0 run to pull ahead for good, and later in the half, the Owls were scoreless for over five minutes as UConn built a 16-point, 32-16 lead with a 14-0 run.
Cummings' second trey capped a 7-0 run near the three-minute mark that cut Temple's deficit to nine, but it would get no closer.
UConn took a 48-34 lead into the break thanks to nearly 60 percent shooting from the field and 15 points from Napier, who hit 6-of-8 including 3-of-5 from long range.
The Huskies hit their 10th three-pointer of the contest early in the second half as part of a 10-0 run that pushed their lead to over 20 points, and they never looked back.
On one occasion the Owls trimmed the margin to 14, but could come no closer. Dalton Pepper's jumper with 6:11 remaining was the final field goal for Temple as the Owls hit just three free throws the rest of the way.
Pepper finished with 12 points, as did Quenton DeCosey who has reached double figures for Temple in every game this season. DeCosey also led the team with six rebounds.
Temple's next game has the Owls hosting #15/16 Cincinnati just 12 days after playing the Bearcats for the first time this season. Cincinnati is undefeated in conference play at 6-0. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26 on CBS Sports Network.
