#16 Field Hockey Wins 4-1 at William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Falling behind in the opening minute proved to be no problem for the 16th-ranked Temple field hockey team, as the Owls (11-5) rallied for a 4-1 win at William & Mary (5-9) on Saturday afternoon.Â
Senior forward Amber Youtz scored twice for Temple, putting her season total at 22 goals to match her own season-best with three regular-season games left to play. As a sophomore, Youtz also scored 22 goals which ranks sixth all-time at Temple in a single season. With 64 career goals, Youtz ranks fourth and now stands just four goals away from tying for third all-time.
The Tribe got on the scoreboard just 21 seconds into the contest on a goal from Maria Pastor, but it would be William & Mary's only goal of the game.
The Owls have struggled with giving up goals early, and despite rallying back on most occasions, Temple head coach Amanda Janney knows it's something that needs to change.
"We're still working things out on our defense and with marking players," she said. "We don't come out with the intensity that we need to sometimes."
After 30 minutes of scoreless field hockey, Youtz tied the game in the 31st minute when she drove through the defense and backhanded a shot past William & Mary's Meredith Savage. The 1-1 tie stood through halftime, but Temple quickly got on the board again in the second period.
Four minutes into the second half, Temple was credited with an own goal to take a 2-1 lead when Kelsea Hull deflected the ball into William & Mary's goal off a shot by Tricia Light, who earned the goal for the Owls.Â
"We were creating a lot of attack," said Janney, "and Tricia drove to the left wing and hit a shot across the circle that a defender tipped up and over the goalie. It was a hard hit, and a good play by Tricia to make something happen. She's been working hard and I was glad to see her make something happen on that play."
Four minutes later, the Owls struck again on a penalty corner. Youtz scored on the direct corner off assists from senior Nicole Kroener and junior Rachel Steinman.
With less than seven minutes remaining, redshirt freshman Sarah Keer scored her first career goal when she stole a pass inside the circle.
"It was great to see Sarah score her first goal," said Janney. "She has an amazingly powerful shot and it great to see her put one away for us and get a big goal when we needed it."
After the first shot by the Tribe got past her, Temple senior goalkeeper Lizzy Millen was solid the rest of the way with six saves. Meredith Savage made five saves for William & Mary.
Janney was very complimentary of her team's defense after the game, and their ability to shut down a strong attack by William & Mary.
"They were a strong team," she said, "with physical, powerful hitters, and they did a great job to pressure our backs. We accomplished our team goal to not to give up more than four corners a game and only gave up one today so that was great for us. Elle Hempt really stepped up for us in the back this weekend. She made some really good contributions off the bench and did everything we asked of her."
The Owls will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 24 in a BIG EAST game at Georgetown at 1:00 p.m.
