#16 Field Hockey Earns Second Straight Shutout, 4-0 Against Lafayette

10.26.14 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - Junior Erin VanHorn scored twice and senior Amber Youtz was involved in every goal as #16 Temple field hockey beat Lafayette 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at Geasey Field. It was the Owls' second straight shutout and third straight win, and improves Temple's overall record to 13-5.

Youtz scored Temple's first goal just before halftime, and the Owls went on to explode for three second-half goals, all of which were assisted by Youtz. She leads all players in NCAA Division I with 25 goals (1.39 per game) and with 67 career goals she is now just one away from tying for third all-time at Temple.

"It took us a little while to get the passing going, but that was a good game," said Temple head coach Amanda Janney. "We had to battle through some difficulties and just keep fighting. Amber made a great shot to give us the lead at halftime.

"We've talked about that Amber will get double-teamed, and she did a great job to draw two defenders and dish it to Erin...The passing with our forwards was excellent in the second half. The depth of our forward line really showed and we were very happy for Rachael and Erin to get in there and make a big play."

Neither team got much offense going in the first half with just two shots on goal each. Temple had four corners to Lafayette's two, but came up empty as the Leopards' Katelyn Arnold made three saves.

With the clock ticking down toward halftime, Sarah Deck fed the ball to Youtz near midfield, who drove all the way down into the circle before taking a strong shot that went into the near side of the cage.

The momentum shift got the Owls' confidence up, and they eventually went on a second-half run to put the game away. The scoring times were extremely similar to the Owls' 4-0 win at Georgetown two days ago, with one first-half goal and three goals in fairly quick succession in the second half.

Eighteen minutes into the second half, freshman Rachael Mueller got things going when she took a pass from the left side from Youtz and was in good position to get it past Arnold. Just under four minutes later, Youtz fed a wide-open VanHorn from the right side.

VanHorn was in the right spot again five minutes later, and off a strong pass from Youtz she made a diving shot that found its way into the right side of the cage.

Senior goalkeeper Lizzy Millen made three saves for the Owls in nearly 62 minutes of action, while Arnold finished with three saves as well for Lafayette. Temple junior defender Taylor Shronk had an impressive outing, getting two defensive saves for the Owls.

Temple has just one game remaining in the regular season, and it will be a challenging one as the Owls host defending NCAA and BIG EAST champion UConn. The Huskies are currently ranked #5, and will come to Temple for a 1:00 p.m. game on Saturday, Nov. 1. Temple's three seniors, Youtz, Millen and Nicole Kroener, will be honored prior to the game for Senior Day.
