PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The 14th-ranked Temple field hockey team rode the momentum of a huge second-half comeback into overtime and earned a 4-3 win in the BIG EAST opener at Providence on Friday evening. The Owls (8-3, 1-0) trailed 3-0 to the Friars (7-4, 0-1) at halftime before coming back to tie, and freshman Maiyah Brown scored the game-winner in the seventh minute of the overtime period off an assist from senior Amber Youtz.
"Amber had been making so many amazing runs and using her speed," said Temple head coach Amanda Janney, "and she finally got a little bit more space. Maiyah had just been subbed in and she did a great job to stay with her, and Amber did a great job to see her open on the far post. Maiyah hit it hard and one-timed it in and our team ran out to celebrate."
For Brown, it was her second collegiate goal, and not one she'll soon forget. "It was amazing," she said. "For a second, I thought my heart stopped."Â
Brown credited the leadership by the upperclassmen for making the Owls' comeback a reality. "Without the leadership by our seniors and captains out there, I don't think it would have been possible," she said.Â
The win is the third in a row for Temple, who returns home to face #9 Penn State at noon on Sunday, Oct. 5.
Junior Sarah Deck scored the game's equalizer with 5:38 left in regulation on a direct corner with assists from senior Nicole Kroener and sophomore Paige Gross. Also scoring for Temple in its second-half comeback were senior Amber Youtz and sophomore Katie Foran.
Providence took a lead in the 15th minute on a goal by Steph Guglielmo, which was assisted by Daniella Bernasconi. Bernasconi would then go on to score the next two goals for the Friars, one in the 27th minute and one that was a dagger in the final minute of the first half.
At the break, Providence led 3-0 and goalkeeper Deidra Clymer had been forced to make only two saves on shots by the Owls.
Temple's second-half comeback was slow in coming, as it was the Friars to earn the first corner and to take the first two shots. Finally, nearly 20 minutes into the half, Temple earned a penalty corner and was able to take advantage.
"We were too passive in the first half," said Janney. "We were getting out-hustled and we had a couple good shots but we weren't executing. Our corner execution in the second half was outstanding. We were pushing the pace to get more opportunities, and it took awhile to figure out how to play a faster tempo, but with the speed of our team that ultimately worked to our advantage."
Youtz scored the first of what would be two direct penalty corner goals, thanks to assists from Kroener and Gross. Less than five minutes later, Foran collected a loose ball and flipped it by Clymer to put Temple within a goal with 11:55 remaining.
Deck's tying goal came with 5:38 left in regulation as Kroener and Gross recorded their second assists of the game. The Owls went on to have a chance to win before overtime, but a shot by Foran with 43 seconds remaining was saved by Clymer.
In the extra period, Temple goalkeeper Lizzy Millen came up with a big save in the sixth minute. The Owls then kept possession and went right back down to the other end, where a breakaway by Youtz led to the game-winner. She got it to Brown in the circle, who one-timed it to the left post on a hard hit to end the game and complete Temple's comeback.
