#14 Field Hockey Begins BIG EAST Play at Providence on Friday; Hosts #9 Penn State on Sunday

10.2.14 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - Coming off a 2-0 week and a move upward in the national rankings, #14 Temple field hockey will look to keep the momentum going as the Owls travel to Providence (7-3) on Friday at 5:00 p.m. for their first BIG EAST Conference game of the season. Temple (7-3) will return home to face #9 Penn State (8-2) on Sunday at noon.

The Owls were picked to finish third of the six teams in the BIG EAST this season, while the Friars were picked to finish fourth. Providence is off to a strong start at 7-3 after going 8-10 last season, and the Friars bring a five-game win streak into Friday's BIG EAST opener. Temple is 3-0 all-time against Providence, and won 3-1 at home against the Friars in 2013.

Penn State owns a 30-2-1 advantage in the all-time series with Temple, but the Owls upset the Nittany Lions last season. Temple earned a 3-0 shutout win on the road on Sept. 6, 2013 against then-#6 Penn State, and the Owls moved into the national rankings at #11 the following week.
The Nittany Lions are 8-2 so far and will play at Drexel on Friday before facing Temple on Sunday. Four of Penn State's wins have been against Top 20 teams (Old Dominion, Virginia, Princeton and Michigan State).

Temple is coming off a 2-0 week after home wins against Kent State and American. The Owls shut out Kent State, 5-0, and held off American by a score of 3-2. The Owls moved up a spot this week to #14 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, released on Sept. 30. They have been ranked as high as #13 this season and have now been ranked for four straight weeks after not being ranked in the preseason poll.
