Men's Basketball Falls in Big 5 Action at #7/7 Villanova
12.14.14 | Men's Basketball
VILLANOVA, Pa. - Impressive shooting, particularly from behind the arc, led #7/7 Villanova to an 85-62 Big 5 win over Temple (6-4) on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats (10-0) hit over 52 percent of their field goal attempts, including 9-of-15 from three-point range.
With the win, Villanova clinches at least a share of the Big 5 title with one game remaining, while Temple finishes Big 5 play for the season with a record of 2-2.
Junior Quenton DeCosey hit 8-of-8 free throws on his way to a team-high 18 points to lead Temple. Senior Will Cummings added 14 points, and freshman Obi Enechionyia finished with season-highs of 10 points and six rebounds.
The Owls struggled from the field for most of the contest, particularly in the first half. The Villanova defense held Cummings and DeCosey, the Owls' leading scorers, to a combined eight field goals with many of those coming late in the game.
The Wildcats got 20-point performances from both Josh Hart and Darrun Hilliard, and the two combined to hit 6-of-7 three-pointers.
Temple slowed its pace on offense and the strategy seemed to be paying off in the opening minutes, but Villanova's strong shooting soon won out. The Wildcats used a 13-0 run to take their first double-digit lead near the 12 and a half minute mark, and went on to shoot 56 percent from the field.
The Owls used an 8-2 run to cut the margin to five, 17-12 at the 11-minute mark, but it was as close as they would get for the rest of the game.
The play of Enechionyia was a highlight for Temple down the stretch of the half, as he scored seven of the Owls' final 14 points and was strong on the boards as well. He finished the half with 10 points and six rebounds, both of which surpassed his previous season highs.
Villanova's strong shooting included hitting 4-of-8 from long range in the first half, while the Owls hit 2-of-6 but shot just 28 percent from the field overall. Free throws helped keep them in the game, as they hit 10-of-12. The Wildcats closed on a 5-1 run and scored just before the break to take a 39-27 lead into halftime.
With a 7-4 opening run in the second half, the Owls were able to narrow Villanova's lead to 10, but Temple would come no closer. The Wildcats took their first 20-point lead just past the 10-minute mark. That was followed by a 9-0 run for the Owls to make up some ground, but the deficit was already too great.
Temple will be back in action on Thursday, Dec. 18 in a 7:00 p.m. game at Delaware (1210 AM WPHT). Thursday's contest will mark the first game of eligibility for both senior Jesse Morgan and junior Devin Coleman, with both having been sidelined due to NCAA transfer rules.
