PHILADELPHIA - Montrezl Harrell's double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds led #13/8 Louisville (20-4, 9-2) to an 82-58 win over Temple men's basketball on Friday night at the Liacouras Center. The Owls will return to their home court in just two days, facing #23 SMU on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 2:00 p.m.
Will Cummings led Temple (6-17, 1-10) with 16 points, scoring 11 of those in the second half including nine straight as part of a 16-2 run for the Owls. Anthony Lee was the only other Temple player to score in double figures, finishing with his season average of 14 points.
Three others besides Harrell reached double figures for Louisville. Russ Smith scored 15, Wayne Blackshear put up 13 and Luke Hancock finished with 11, scoring all of them in the first half. The Cardinals shot close to 52 percent from the field in the game, and out-rebounded Temple, 43-32.
Louisville set the pace early in the contest, jumping out to a 15-4 lead and never looked back. The Cardinals shot nearly 63 percent in the first half, led by Harrell with 15 points and Hancock with 11. Hancock hit three of his four attempts from long range, and Louisville finished the half at 6-of-10 from behind the arc.
Temple found itself down by 30 with less than a minute to go in the half, but Mark Williams hit a three-pointer for the Owls to make it 52-25 Louisville at the break.
Lee led Temple with eight first-half points, hitting 3-of-6 from the field. Turnovers were costly for the Owls, who gave up 12 points to Louisville off eight turnovers, while forcing only two miscues on the Cardinals.
The Owls scored the first four points of the second half, but Louisville quickly resumed its earlier pace and continued to build its lead. With nine minutes left in the game, the Cardinals led by their largest margin of 36, 76-40.
With 7:40 left, Cummings hit a bucket that would become his first two points of nine straight for the Owls, which were part of a 16-2 run over a six minute span. Ultimately, the run was only enough to bring a 35-point deficit down to 21 points, 79-58 with 2:40 remaining in the game.
Sunday's game against #23 SMU will be broadcast by CBS Sports Network. It is the second of five straight games the Owls will play against teams ranked in the Top 25.
