Baseball Defeats USF 6-5 with Walk Off Hit by Robert Amaro

4.12.14 | Baseball

CAMDEN, N.J. – Temple baseball defeated USF 6-5 in walk off fashion on Saturday afternoon at Campbell's Field.  The win improves Temple's record to 10-17, 5-6 while USF falls to 19-15, 6-5.

Robert Amaro provided the heroics in the ninth inning with two outs.  The Bulls decided to intentionally walk Michael D'Acunti to face Amaro, and he made them pay with a single to left field that knocked in Josh Mason from third.  Mason started the inning with a single through the left side.  He went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Reyn Sugai and then went to third on a passed ball.

USF had a 5-0 lead, scoring two runs in the second and three in the fifth off starter Patrick Vanderslice.  The Owls then scored six unanswered runs in their comeback win.

The comeback started in the fifth inning when the Owls scored four runs.  Andrew Nist led off the inning with a walk.  Frank D'Agostino doubled to left to move Nist to third.  Bobby Heitzman had a RBI single to center field that brought in D'Agostino.  Reyn Sugai then singled through the left side that scored Heitzman from second.  Derek Peterson hit his 15th double of the season to centerfield that allowed Sugai to score from first.

The Owls tied the game up in the eighth.  With one out, Amaro singled to third base.  Nist singled through the left side with two outs.  Daniel Dragos then came in to pinch-hit for D'Agostino and delivered with a RBI single up the middle that knocked in Amaro.

Patrick Krall and Tim McCarthy combined for four scoreless innings of relief.  Krall pitched three innings, allowing two hits while striking out one batter.  McCarthy got his second win of the year by retiring the side in the ninth inning with one strikeout.

Sugai, Amaro, and Nist all finished with two hits. Five different Owls had a RBI, and Amaro had his team-leading 27th RBI of the season from the walk off hit.

The two teams will face off at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow morning at Campbell's Field to determine the weekend series winner.  Ryan Kuehn will start for Temple.
