Baseball Defeats Cincinnati 7-5 in Debut at Campbell's Field
4.4.14 | Baseball
Matt Hockenberry once again had a quality start for the Owls, allowing only two earned runs, three walks and one walk to advance his record to 4-1. The senior pitcher had a season-high eight strikeouts in seven innings. Hockenberry has now earned a win in three of his past four starts.
Derek Peterson scored the game-winning run in the sixth inning off a sacrifice fly to left field by Andrew Nist. Peterson walked with one out to get on base. He went to second on a single through the left side by Robert Amaro and moved to third on a fielding error on the next at-bat.
Both teams scored runs in the second inning. Amaro singled through the right side to start the inning. Michael D'Acunti moved Amaro to second with a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher. Frank D'Agostino knocked in Amaro with a single to center field.
Temple got its first lead the next inning. Josh Mason was hit by a pitch, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Reyn Sugai. A fielding error at third base on a grounder from Jimmy Kerrigan allowed Mason to score from second base.
After Cincinnati tied the game in the fourth inning, the Owls regained the lead in the inning. D'Agostino singled to right field with one out and went to second on a fielding error at second base on a Daniel Dragos grounder. Josh Mason then walked to load the bases. Sugai hit a fly ball deep enough to left field that allowed D'Agostino to score safely.
After Cincinnati tied the game once again in the fifth inning, the Owls took the lead for good with two runs. Derek Peterson walked to lead off the inning and stole second base. Michael D'Acunti then hit a RBI triple down the right field line. After Andrew Nist walked, a fielding error at second base by the shortstop allowed D'Acunti to score.
The Owls added a run in the seventh inning that pushed their lead to four runs. Daniel Dragos was hit by a pitch and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mason. With two outs, Jimmy Kerrigan doubled to center field to knock in Dragos.
The Bearcats scored two runs in the eight to give themselves a chance to tie it in the ninth. Zach Batchelor came in the ninth, and denied Cincinnati's rally attempt for his fourth save of the year. After recording two outs with fly balls, Batchelor grounded out the last batter to end the game.
The second game of the weekend series will start at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow night.
