#13 Field Hockey Suffers 1-0 Overtime Loss to Drexel
9.21.14 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - After 79 minutes of scoreless field hockey, it was Drexel (4-3) to get the sudden death goal in overtime against #13 Temple on Sunday afternoon at Geasey Field. The Owls (5-3) had nine total shots on goal to the Dragons' five, but in the end it only took one to win the game.
"Drexel's pressure did a good job to close holes for us, where in other games we've been able to find big pockets," said Temple head coach Amanda Janney. "Today it was tough to find those open passes. Our girls really gave it all they had yesterday (at Bucknell) and we just didn't have enough gas in the tank today. It was a good battle for us to play exhausted and still put together a really good game.
"We're still proud of the effort our team gave today. We lost to a quality team that did a good job to pressure us. They were fresh, they didn't play another game this weekend, and we played back-to-back...but that's a good test for us because to do well in conference and NCAA's we have to play back-to-back games."
Temple goalkeeper Lizzy Millen made four saves in the contest, including one on Drexel's only penalty corner of the game, near the midway point of the first half.
The Owls had the majority of their best scoring chances in the first half, with seven of their shots on goal. Senior forward Amber Youtz, who scored twice on Saturday in a win at Bucknell, took three of those but all were saved by Drexel's Jantier Gunter.
Both goalkeepers made one save in overtime before the Dragons' Christina Conrad scored in the 10th minute of the extra period, off a deflected shot by Jessica McCarthy.
Gunter finished with eight saves for Drexel.
Temple will play both of its games at home next week, facing Kent State first on Saturday, Sept. 27 at noon.
