#15 Field Hockey Shuts Out Kent State 5-0 Behind Hat Trick by Amber Youtz

PHILADELPHIA - Behind the fifth career hat trick for senior forward Amber Youtz and an impressive performance by senior goalkeeper Lizzy Millen, the 15th-ranked Temple field hockey team shut out visiting Kent State by a score of 5-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Owls (6-3) will turn right around and host American at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.

With her three goals in the contest, Youtz is now tied for fourth all-time at Temple with 51 career goals. Also scoring for the Owls were junior Sarah Deck and sophomore Katie Foran, who added two assists.

"Our defense just played great all around today," said Temple head coach Amanda Janney. "Both of our goalkeepers and our backfield had a strong game. We've been challenging the team to play smarter, patient defense and we made some great tackles today. The shut out is really well-deserved by our players, and something we've been striving for."

Millen played nearly 55 minutes of the contest and made seven saves against an aggressive Kent State offense. The Golden Flashes (2-6) had a number of opportunities in the game, and took 15 total shots with nine of those being on goal.

"Everybody was really on their game, and we communicated really well today," said Millen. "We keep progressing with our communication and that's why we're continually on point as a unit, and that's why we were so successful."

Millen credited Kent State for keeping her on her toes throughout the contest.

"They were extremely aggressive and physical," she said. "We saw that on film but you really didn't know until you were out on the field. They definitely had some great opportunities and I was a little nervous at times, but we kept composed throughout the game."

The Owls took an early lead to set the tone for the game, as Youtz scored with a tip-in on a shot by Paige Gross in the fourth minute. Just four and a half minutes later, Youtz made it 2-0 when she scored on a direct corner with assists from Nicole Kroener and Rachel Steinman.

In the 21st minute, Sarah Deck scored on a corner play for the Owls thanks to an assist from Foran, and Temple took a 3-0 lead into halftime.

Millen made a save on a Kent State corner seven minutes into the second half, after which the Owls regained the momentum and took it down to the other end. Deck was the catalyst for Temple's fourth goal, bringing the ball down and getting it to Youtz in front of the goal. In a one-on-one situation, Youtz beat Kent State goalkeeper Andrea Rinehart to complete the hat trick.

With nine minutes remaining, Foran scored the final goal of the contest when she drove in from the left side and put one in the back of the cage, unassisted.

Temple's Haley Mitchell played the final 15 minutes in goal, and made one save. Taylor Shronk made a defensive save in the game for the Owls, who finished with nine saves in total. Rinehart made six saves for Kent State, while Susanne Felder recorded two defensive saves for the Flashes.

Janney spoke after the game about Youtz's success, both today and throughout her career.

"We're just really proud of her. Her competitiveness and her athleticism and just her drive and will to win- she's an amazing example for the rest of the team and just a great senior leader for us...Amber is having a great season and leading us to big wins."

The Owls will be back in action on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. against American.
