#15 Field Hockey Defeats American 3-2 to Complete a Weekend Sweep
9.28.14 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - Thanks to a 2-0 lead at halftime, #15 Temple field hockey was able to hold off visiting American (5-5) in the second half and win 3-2. The Owls (7-3) completed a perfect week after winning 5-0 against Kent State on Saturday.
Temple senior Amber Youtz scored the first goal of the game, giving her 52 career goals which now ranks her alone in fourth place all-time in program history.
Youtz finished with three points in the game after also recording an assist on the Owls' second goal. Senior goalkeeper Lizzy Millen made six saves and had to withstand six second-half penalty corners from American.
"We've been emphasizing playing well in the second half when they're tired," said Temple head coach Amanda Janney. "It's been a long weekend (with back-to-back games) and they worked really hard to earn the wins. I think we're still learning to play a little smarter when we're fatigued. We're still making little mistakes and letting teams hang around...but we did what was needed to get three goals, and to score eight goals in a weekend is amazing for us."
Temple had lost four straight games to American dating back to 2004.
"We were reminded that we hadn't beat American in a long time," said Janney. "They're a very well-coached team. They have great structure and their backs played the best I've seen all season. For us to handle their pressure and execute was great and we're very proud of our team right now."
Neither team scored for the first 17 minutes despite a couple of strong chances for Temple. Finally in the 18th minute, Youtz drove down and beat American goalkeeper Kate McBeath one-on-one for a 1-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later, junior Erin Van Horn was in perfect position to redirect a shot by Youtz into the cage for her first goal of the season. The 2-0 lead stood for the next 27 minutes of game time.
Just over 11 minutes into the second half, the Eagles scored on a corner, of which they earned nine in the game compared to two for the Owls. Rebecca Treharne was the goal-scorer, assisted by Grace Wilson.
Junior Amanda Fuertsch scored her first goal of the year with just over 10 minutes remaining to give Temple some insurance. Tricia Light took a strong shot that was saved by American's McBeath, and Fuertsch was in the right spot to take the rebound and score.
The ninth corner earned by American was in the final minute, and the corner played on through the final buzzer. Angela Virtu was able to get her team on the board for a second time on the play, assisted by Isabel Terwindt.
American's McBeath finished with six saves in the game on 10 shots on goal by the Owls. Wilson made a defensive save for the Eagles as well.
Temple's next game is its first BIG EAST Conference contest of the season. The Owls will travel to Providence on Friday, Oct. 3 for a 5:00 p.m. start.
