Men's Basketball Travels to New League Member Tulane on Wednesday

1.6.15 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - Riding a five-game win streak, Temple men's basketball heads to new American Athletic Conference member Tulane for a Wednesday night contest (7:00 p.m. EST) on ESPNews. The Owls (11-4, 2-0) and the Green Wave (11-3, 2-0) both have strong overall records and are both undefeated after two conference games.

The trip to Tulane is the Owls' first since Jan. 20, 1996. The Owls and the Green Wave are tied 2-2 in the all-time series, but Wednesday will mark their first meeting in over 18 years. In addition to being televised by ESPNews, the game will be broadcast on 1210 AM WPHT.

For the first time this season, Temple is receiving votes in both Top 25 polls. The Owls have 33 votes in the Jan. 5 Associated Press Poll (sixth-most among teams receiving votes) and two votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Owls are looking to crack the Top 25 for the first time since March 5, 2012, when the team was ranked #21 by the AP and #24 in the Coaches Poll. The nation's sixth winningest program with 1,834 victories, Temple has been nationally ranked by the AP in 155 of its weekly polls and in 18 seasons overall. Head coach Fran Dunphy has had his squad ranked in the Top 25 during 24 weeks and in three of his nine seasons at the helm.

Junior forward Jaylen Bond and senior guard Will Cummings scored 21 points apiece to lead the Owls to an 84-78 win vs. UCF in their most recent game on Jan. 4. Bond, who is averaging a league-best 8.0 rebounds per game, made it his second double-double in three games with a game-high 14 boards. His 21 points were a career high, and he was named the Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week on Jan. 5.

Temple's win against UCF kept the Owls undefeated at the Liacouras Center this season with a record of 7-0.

Cummings leads the Owls in scoring at 14.2 points per game, but is followed closely by junior Quenton DeCosey (14.1 ppg) and senior transfer Jesse Morgan (14.0 ppg). Since adding Morgan and junior transfer Devin Coleman to the active roster on Dec. 18 at Delaware, the results for Temple have been impressive. Over the last five games, all wins, Temple is averaging nine more points per game and allowing 2.8 fewer points per game than they did in their first 10 games. After hitting 45 three-pointers over the first 10 games, Temple has made 48 three-pointers in just the last five games.

The Owls' field-goal shooting has risen from 36.2 to 41.1, with their three-point field-goal percentage going from 25.9 to 36.4. Temple is averaging nearly five more assists per game, two more steals per game and four more rebounds per game. The Owls wins over the last five games have included a 25-point victory over #10/10 Kansas, as well as an overtime win on the road at defending national champion UConn.

Tulane lost its season opener to Wake Forest before rattling off nine straight wins. The Green Wave are now 11-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play with wins at East Carolina (67-59) and Memphis (74-66). Three players average between 11 and 13 points per game to lead the Green Wave. Sophomore guard Jonathan Stark averages a team-best 13.2 ppg while also leading the Green Wave with 3.6 assists per game. As a team, the Green Wave have scored 70.3 ppg to lead The American, and they rank second in shooting at 46.3 percent.

Temple and Tulane are meeting for the fifth time but the first in just over 18 years. The series is tied 2-2, with the Owls winning the most recent game 67-49 at home on Dec. 9, 1996. Wednesday's meeting will mark the first time for Temple and Tulane meeting as conference opponents.
